Re: Brexit
I do find the rigidity of the EU stance over the transition period a bit odd, since we will be continuing to cough up the full EU contribution you would think they would be willing to compromise, rather than have us walk away entirely and pay them nothing. And they were the ones who wanted it finished by the end of 2020 whereas our proposal was the end of May 2021, thus losing 5 months contributions; and the pundits criticise our negotiators for not being too bright!

Re: Brexit
The problem is John, that the 'other side' are fully aware of the divisions within the government on this subject.
It is a proper divide and conquer movement, which is actually what we should be doing to them.
All the time Soubrey, Grieve, Morgan and all are undermining their own governments position, it make it very difficult.
They are so hell bent on trying to prove that they were right all along, that they have lost site of the bigger picture.
If they could accept that in march 2019, the UK is formally leaving, then maybe they could put their effort into making it a seamless as possible, but they and a small minority of others, cannot bring themselves to do it.
The only one who has acted with any dignity in this whole fiasco was Alan Johnson, who was the main Labour speaker in the Remain campaign.
He spoke passionately for Remain but lost. His constituency voting overwhelmingly to Leave, so he accepted it and stood down at the last election.
He said that he was now out of step with the people he was elected to represent.
Anna Soubrey's constituency voted to Leave, but she has stayed on and was re-elected at the last election with a very much reduced majority.
She clearly knows better than the people who elected her.

Gill W, the alternative to this shower would be Corbyn and his gang of Robin Hood politicians, feel free to complain all you want about Theresa's gang, but I know which one I prefer.

Re: Brexit
What we need is more clarity
Personally, I don't think the UK stance could be clearer.
I dug out the Tory leaflet pre -ref. You know, the one we paid £9 million for.
Dave & George clearly stated that a vote to leave the EU would mean leaving the single market and the customs union.
I went to see him at a televised debate in Dover and he said the same.
'Make no bones about it' he said. ' A vote to leave will mean we leave the single market and the customs union'
Then dear old Teresa gave a speach at Lancaster house, saying the same.
Then she repeated again in Florence as far as I can remember.
But we need more clarity say the EU team.
I'm not sure how much clearer that can be.
It really is time for TM to put up or shut up.
The country is looking for leadership.
If she has anything about her, she must insist that the Cabinet speak with a single voice and anyone who can't or won't sign up to that must resign.
This could be her last week as PM if she doesn't get back on track.
The long knives are out and being sharpened.
Personally I'd like her to show a bit of gumption and come through this.
The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.
So Prime minister, please grow a pair and put the dissenters back in their box, for the good of the country.
As we all know, Corbyn is 100% Leaver because of his desire to nationalise everything but the people he surrounds himself with will bring this country down.

clarity ? what clarity?
It seems that the EU team still think it's a bluff.

Re: Brexit
Wrong Ray. If you take a look at the demographics of the referendum you will find that it was the more deprived areas of the country who voted quite overwhelmingly to leave.Ray Scully wrote: 16 Feb 2018, 16:34Not borne out by the facts OBF.. Re: Brexit
So, John Major, who has PM signed the Maastricht Treaty without consent, feels we should possibly have another referrendum because in 2 yrs or so the people may have different views.?
This from a man who cheated on his wife with another MP.. At least he had the decency to do it with someone from the same party..!

What right does he have to tell the current government what to do? He's an ex PM. An ex MP. In fact he's just like me. One citizen with one vote in elections and one vote in the EU referendum.
