I'm sure you are right Mob......l think it's generally accepted that the speaker gets this golden handshake. Had he played a neutral roll during Brexit he probably would have got one.....Boris will need to watch his back because a man with a grudge can be a very dangerous man especially as he will still have the ear of many who lurk in the corridors of Westminster.Manoverboard wrote: 01 Jun 2020, 10:01Can he actually do that or is the evevation to the Lords deemed to be a ' gift ' resting in the hands of the PM / Her Maj ?Onelife wrote: 01 Jun 2020, 09:40He'll more than likely challenge this decisionMidlandslass wrote: 01 Jun 2020, 09:16Good to hear that the odious John Bercow will not be getting a peerage under this government.![]()

Re: Current Affairs
True. That's probably the reason why Boris has blocked his nomination. I think it's called comeuppance after his behaviour whilst in the Chair. He had his glory days and, no doubt thought he was invincible. That all changed with the General Election.Onelife wrote: 01 Jun 2020, 10:26........ a man with a grudge can be a very dangerous man especially as he will still have the ear of many who lurk in the corridors of Westminster.
Furthermore when you look back at the way Corbyn behaved by ignoring Boris as they walked into the House of Lords for the Queen's Speech Boris would no doubt take delight in thwarting him too.
No love lost there either!!!

I don't know if this has always been the case Foxy, but nowadays there seems to but small camps within each of the main parties ready to ignite fires of disharmony.....Bercow encouraged this in order to make himself more powerful....while not realising it is the people who ultimately hold the real power as in the case of Brexit.oldbluefox wrote: 01 Jun 2020, 15:32True. Re: Current Affairs
When you get 5 year olds telling teachers 'You can't touch me' you ask where they got that from and then wonder why we have the problems we have nowadays.
That said there has always been bovver from pubescent kids!!!

I personally don’t actually agree with smacking because those who smack generally carry on smacking beyond where is serves any purpose. If you’re still smacking a ten-year-old then you as a parent have learnt nothing about parenting.screwy wrote: 02 Jun 2020, 10:28Mostly from the 30s downward...products of Governments soft society....no smacking, no losers etc.

Re: Current Affairs
0 to 10 is the easiest bit and a slap on the back of the leg did nobody any harm. All children need to be taught, one way or another, right from wrong and sparing the rod is not always the way to go.Onelife wrote: 02 Jun 2020, 15:03I personally don’t actually agree with smacking because those who smack generally carry on smacking beyond where is serves any purpose. Let us assume, OL, that you have a little girl and because she is the only one she will behave if only because she is getting all the attention and all her own way. Daddy will be idolised, in part to ensure that she continues to get all her own way but in reality she could be playing you for a sucker. The problems could start when she gets married and because of her soft upbringing will not know how to compromise nor how to share nor to give any consideration that doesn’t suit her to her partner. A divorce will logically follow and it will be all your fault because you made her your ‘ Little Princess ‘.
Boys on the other hand will play their fathers to destruction point, Daddy is my Super Hero is dropped in favour of taking the old fool to the wire.
Discipline and compromise in the home is respected by children, albeit cruelty is not, of that there is no doubt and it was certainly the case in our family home and we remain a tight knit unit to this day because of it.
