I think the problem is that people don't agree with strong views such as those of TMM but instead argue the point. Very often someone will posted deliberately to get a reaction although that might not always be true. The original poster gets the reaction they seek and then these threads quickly descend into unpleasantness. I think the secret is allowing everyone their view (within reason) without trying to force them to agree with you. Agreeing to differ is the only way to go, in my opinion.
