so the government should use this time to send a clear message out that there will be a 2 week lockdown commencing a week prior to the October school break and another two week lockdown over the Christmas period
Brilliant idea - not.

There are some of us who have been responsible throughout all of this who have, for the first time in the last six months, arranged a break over both of these periods.

A lot of the responsibility for the behaviour of the younger generation lies with the venues that the visit. There is no reason why the venue, apart from money grabbing, cannot (in fact it is legal requirement) enforce social distancing. If you go into a pub, you sit at a table and are served. If a venue is not adhering to the law then the remedy is simple - shut the place down, fine the licensee and revoke their licence - the police have these powers.

This inept PM needs to step down and be replaced with someone who can steer what is for the best part a flock of headless chickens with no direction.

Don’t kill gran or grandad but don’t stop going to the pubs and restaurants is like ordering a pint and asking them not to drink it. :x

We have the October school holidays coming up soon so the government should use this time to send a clear message out that there will be a 2 week lockdown commencing a week prior to the October school break and another two week lockdown over the Christmas period and so on….this way we will keep the virus under control until such time that a vaccine can be found.

Bring back Theresa

You may think that you're missing out but it's quite incredible how the human mind resigns itself to the new normal.

The sensible approach is that anyone who has concerns, stay isolated as much as possible, and those who don't, get on with their lives.

A two week unnecessary Xmas lockdown would be an absolute disaster for the retail and hospitality business.

If we followed your suggestion, there would be little to come back to, when a vaccine is found.

PS - I totally agree about the inept PM

Well I just hope you haven’t arranged your break in any of the university towns because they are soon to become the new no-go virus hot spots.

Where there’s a will David the young will find a way round it…. we need a way to contain/slow down the virus spread and my suggestion does in my opinion have merit.

Enjoy your well-earned break

The future of retail outlets has already been decided Barney as most people now shop online.

When this is all behind us pubs and restaurants will flourish…but perhaps not under the same ownership.

As for the small independents (with that niche element) they along with charity shops will do ok.

Welcome to the new high street.

That not quite correct keefy
Most retail transactions are still face to face although it is obvious that online is increasing massively.

All the time that the average joe is happy to add to the worlds richest man’s billions, then it will continue as such.
Laziness is what’s driving it.
Some people just find it easier to sit on their backside clicking buy.

We had a successful campaign in our area of #bricksnotclicks
Fortunately for us, the local people around our area support the local businesses.
I’m not saying people don’t buy online because they obviously do. I do myself occasionally.
But the priority always is local first, British second.

I wouldn’t disagree with what you say barney but as you say online shopping is for many the way they want to go.

As to whether or not retail shopping will survive will depend very much on where they are located…rural towns such as Ludlow relies heavily on locals supporting them which many do… I’m always in and out of Betfred etc.

I can think of several who would be less inept …but what a sad state of affairs our political system has become in not having any credible opposition?.

Maybe the people are themselves doing what the government feared to enforce. The young are out partying and developing herd immunity while the more cautious older people are letting them get on with it.

I will happily pay over the odds in Torrington etc if on holiday for one's refreshments plus a few items that we thought would be useful at that time but other than that we tend to shop online but not as you describe it. For example we used to spend the day in Salisbury and always made shop purchases in Lakeland but not any more, we buy the same items online but only if they are brand named else cheaper than Amazon 'n' chums. the same applies to Supermarkets and Boots etc because we no longer see the point of driving for miles and miles to buy something that is available to us from the comfort of our own home. We do support the farm shops, pubs and Country Stores but the latter offer website sales and have done so for many years.

Hopefully social gatherings of no more than 6 will slow down covid transmissions, but how many extra police will we need to ensure lawbreakers are arrested?

That’s cos they are school children 😂
They are not going to, are they?
I watched some guy on the local news last night complete some sort of charity swim.
When he got out of the water, he hugged and kissed about twenty different people.
The presenter never said a word 🙁

I also note that Matt Hancock commented that one of the major reasons for the current delays in Covid testing, is due to to far too many non symptomatic people requesting a test, in some cases because they are about to go on holiday and want to know if they are virus free.
This is one of the major problems arising from the testing system, that people seem to crave the extra security of knowing they are virus free, whereas all a test does is say that at this moment in time you are not infected. It doesn't say you are definitely not incubating the virus, and certainly does not say you are safer to socialise than you were yesterday, nor does it say you won't become infected tomorrow.
The only way to try and avoid becoming infected, is to maintain social distancing at all times, hand-wash regularly, especially while away from your own home, and avoid at all costs getting too close to someone not wearing a mask.
The new, no more than 6 groupings, will have very little impact on us, or indeed our immediate family, although I have to admit one of my wife's family groupings, is guilty of having tests without any symptoms, and I will be making my displeasure known to them.

If having a test gives them assurance then why not, providing they are paying the £200(?) cost of their tests.
