This is what I cannot bear. I do not know how some people reconcile their faith with how they treat others and how they live their lives. Religious dogma, fundamentalists, I don't think any religion condones the use of violence yet people are terrorised and murdered by those who do not want their faith. Priests who abuse children, surely they must be deranged for no decent person could abuse a child whilst being a man of the cloth? It is unbearable.

Like I said to you, Mo, on the other thread, "by their fruits (works/actions) you will know them". Christians weep at the atrocities done supposedly in their name.

Silver Shiney, as you know, I think it rather a waste of time engaging with you on religion, but since I don't wish to be rude, I am responding to your latest post directed at me. The Yorkshire Ripper said that God told him to kill those women, and people dismiss that entirely out of hand, yet you say that God has 'spoken' to you. David Icke said that he was the Son of God yet people thought he was a crackpot. In my personal experience most religious people I have met have been hypocrites. My mother was brought up by nuns who treated her, and others, appallingly. How did they square such behaviour with their conscience and faith? Then there are those who are ordained who I came across in my job who held high-ranking positions in the Church yet were amongst those I have found to be the most hypocritical - they were people of fruits - works and actions but yet they were found wanting in their treatment of others. I expect people like that to be the best person they can be - every day - and not behave how they like but then know they can seek absolution in prayer. It's not good enough. I probably live my life better than some of those pious individuals ever will.

And like I have said to you, Mo, on more than one occasion, you judge the truth of the matter by what they do. I am quite sure you lead your life better than those pious individuals you have had the misfortune to encounter. It saddens me, however, that you would tar us all with the same brush because of the actions of those hypocrits.

God speaks to people in two ways: one is for that person to glorify God in a personal way and that would not be made public. The other is to do something that not only glorifies God but is of benefit to a third party. If the claimant's actions do neither, God has not spoken.

Kind regards to you and yours.

Just something that came to mind ... when Pope John Paul popped his clogs I remember I put a post up on another board entitled 'The Pope is dead - time to rejoice' and boy did I get flamed. In my opening post I had made it clear that, assuming the man believed what he preached, the excitement and anticipation he must have felt at the prospect of finally going to meet his god, his maker, the entity that he dedicated his life to serving, must have been enormous ... for him and those of similar belief surely it should have been a time of rejoicing.

Silver Shiney, I wonder if you are deliberately baiting me, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you don't keep lifting little snippets so as to secure a response from me, but I shall see if you persist. You have not read my posts properly. I have not tarred everyone with the same brush. I can only speak about those people who I have met or heard about - who purport to be religious, (some of whom have even made a career out of it) - and ALL of those so-called Christians have all been hypocrites who have not practised what they have preached. Please do not put something into my posts which is not there.

I can see where SS is coming from....

you appear to be saying: every Christian you have met is a hypocrite - therefore all Christians are hypocrites...

All SS is doing is pointing out that this is a vast value judgement and that not all Christians are hypocrites.

No Meg, I am saying that all the Christians I have met in my life have been hypocrites. At no time did I say that every Christian is a hypocrite.

SS has agreed there is hypocrisy amongst some of those who purport to be Christians so I'm not sure where the disagreement is. :?

With all due respect, Mo, you seem to be tarring all Christians with the same brush. You say I have not read your posts properly - I have. I would respectfully suggest that you have not read mine at all. Certainly the question I have asked you twice on the other thread has been ignored.

It is certainly not my intention to "bait" anyone on this forum, and if anyone thinks I am, I humbly apologise.

I have read these posts over and over again.

I think Mo is referring to all the Christians she has met, as opposed to all Christians. Apologies if I have got this wrong.

The only point I would make is how Mo knows whether all the people she has met were Christians. I have met a good many Christians, some of whom I was less than impressed with. I also know a good many who are not only regular churchgoers but live their lives as Christians. To my shame I could not be as forgiving as some of them are and they are a shining example to the rest of us.
By the same token I also know others of different religions or no religion who are equally deserving of praise.

OBF said "I think Mo is referring to all the Christians she has met, as opposed to all Christians. Apologies if I have got this wrong."
No, OBF, you are not wrong! That is exactly what I meant and which sadly, no matter how many times I said it, others failed to comprehend.

Well, that's that settled but how do you know that all the Christians you have met are hypocrites? They don't all walk around in Jesus creepers with a cross around their necks. Surely you have met some good ones, albeit unwittingly (although if you met them unwittingly you wouldn't know, would you? Dohhh!!)

I can never think of the Pope without being reminded of an old Private Eye cover with Ian Paisley surrounded by an angry-looking mob with the caption "Right lads, when I say 'sod the pope', stick the boot in" !
