Crazy housing situation
Why are we building homes when so many are standing empty? https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g518le0r5o

Re: Crazy housing situation
Because many/most of these empty properties are not what people want unless it is a new build, in a nice location with all mod cons - oh and at a knockdown price.Stephen wrote: 20 Oct 2024, 10:08Why are we building homes when so many are standing empty? https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g518le0r5o

I guess most of them would need a significant makeover to bring them up to a reasonable standard, and there are nowhere near enough unemployed building tradesmen to to do the work.

Re: Crazy housing situation
There are nowhere near enough builders to build the number of houses that Labour are intent on building - but that does not seem to be an issue.towny44 wrote: 20 Oct 2024, 12:29there are nowhere near enough unemployed building tradesmen to to do the work.
No doubt they are hiding somewhere in the "black hole"

Re: Crazy housing situation
They probably wouldn’t but the residents in Rushcliffe wouldn’t be too happy housing the homeless, as would be the case in many more areas around the country.
I’ve heard Down Souf aren’t too particular about who they let in….

Re: Crazy housing situation
We need to stop building new homes and invest in new reservoirs instead of just talking about it. A plentiful supply of water is needed for all the new homes they are building.

Re: Crazy housing situation
The reality of the housing situation is we don't have too few houses, we have too many people. Even the number of houses Labour promise to build (if they actually manage to keep that promise) will be wiped out by the increase in population over the period. The same with health, schools etc etc. Too many people in our crowded island.

Re: Crazy housing situation
Too many people on this little island and yet we are inviting more in. We have a housing crisis, the NHS is on its knees, as is education and the prison service and meanwhile hundreds of illegal immigrants (sorry, irregular migrants
) are landing on our shores but we have created a task force and there is little or no sign of addressing the problem!!! Wait for it though when Starmer gives them all asylum to clear the backlog which will encourage more to risk the Channel crossing.
Housing is a complex issue. Why are we selling council houses to tenants but building none to reeplace them? What are we doing about second homes which stand empty all year bar a few weeks? Why have we allowed tourist letting agencies and airbnb to take up all of our smaller cottages and houses to the extent young families just setting out on home ownership are outbid in the local housing sector? Where are all of our migrant friends expected to live when we can't house our own? How many homes have been lost in town centres above shops? How do you tackle the homeless crisis? I know, Rayner will pump £1bn into the council house sector and hopefully that will solve it!!! Truth is we have too many people for too few houses and too many houses standing empty, too many second homes or out of the housing market to provide tourist accommodation.

And that's all on top of taking more and more of our countryside away.
How far do you go before we end up like Hong Kong, just a maze of concrete tower blocks wherever you look.

Re: Crazy housing situation
Hi Foxy, some searching questions with little to no answers I would suggest. We will probably jump somewhere in the middle and lose our way trying to find a way out.oldbluefox wrote: 21 Oct 2024, 10:44Too many people on this little island and yet we are inviting more in. With regard to… “Wait for it though when Starmer gives them all asylum to clear the backlog”
I actually think this is what will actually happen as it is clear that it will be logistically impossible to process all the illegal immigrant despite Starmer’s promise to find thousands of qualified Asylum assessors.
Whilst it would be unpalatable, I can see that this option could/should be considered if we are prepared to say NO MORE and return those who set foot on our shores on the next available flight to their country of origin. We can pussy foot around all we like but a clear message with action is the only way we are going to stop them coming.
Short, Sharp, Shock treatment will eventually get results…. I remember putting my finger in a badly wired television plug socket…I never did it again!

Unless things have changed since I last flew, England is still predominantly green countryside.Stephen wrote: 21 Oct 2024, 11:20And that's all on top of taking more and more of our countryside away.
