Scam Phone Number

Unread post by david63 »

Just had a call for my wife (who was not here at the time) from 020 387 23947 purporting to be from Amazon which sounded highly plausible. Looked up the number online and there were no reports for that number, then tried calling it and the line went dead so checked with Amazon and it is not an Amazon number. The operator said that this is common but Amazon do not call customers.

Of course being cautious can work against you.
Recently I ordered a USB stick containing back copies of a well known monthly magazine. It was so small I expected it to come in the post. Anyway I received an email from Yodel to say a package was on its way. I was not expecting a package as such so suspicion was aroused it may be a scam. Later I received a phone call out of the blue from a man with poor grasp of English saying he had a parcel for me but he didn't have a number for my house. I was even more suspicious this may be a scam of some sort and was even more wary. Eventually I instructed him to follow my postcode and I would stand on the step where he could see me!!!!
As it happens it was genuine. The 'package', a small bubble envelope containing the USB stick had my postcode on it but no number so the poor soul trying to deliver it had no chance. We all need to be cautious but it also makes life awkward for genuine causes.

If I get a call from a number I don't recognise I'll answer the phone but say nothing. 9 times out of 10 the line goes dead in a couple of seconds.

I find answering it with "Scotland Yard" Tends to end the call quite radidly.

Its not always Spam .....
Sometimes when you see a hidden number or private number it could be genuine if you have recently spoken to a medical doctor/specialist.
A couple of times I have received calls from a hidden number by the doctor I spoke with earlier (keeping their number private).

This is the problem. You may miss an important call by ignoring them. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing what is spam and what is genuine.

In my opinion there is no reason why a doctor should call from a withheld number, nor for that matter anybody else who is genuine. With modern telephone technology numbers can be made outbound only so people cannot call you back on the displayed number if that is being used as the reason.

I tend not to answer numbers that I don’t recognise, especially mobile numbers. If they are important they will inevitably call back giving you enough time to do a few background checks on the number.

Once I’ve done that I phone back and give them Foxy’s telephone number. :D

I agree with you David, you'd think that would be the case....
but one of the calls as I remember last year was after seeing a doctor in a private hospital ( think Bupa/Nuffield etc) and having a call from their colleague ( who I had not spoken to ) about a private prescription & there was no number on my phone...just came came up as Private.
I can only give you what I experienced.
