In the news today, reports about three young women who disappeared a decade ago and have been found in a house in Ohio USA.

I expect there will be much more revealed in the coming weeks / months but wonder if they actually ever get over something like this.

It is horrific. These women were apparently in the house all those years, and the neighbours had no idea. What I cant quite get my head round, is how they were able to scream and shout yesterday, but couldn't do so for the past 10 years. I am sure we will learn much more in the coming weeks and months. I've been thinking the same thing Jay. Not being snooty - but looking at the property where these women were kept on the tv, they are built of wood in the main, quite rickety - I can't see how the women couldn't be heard or couldn't escape before.

Oh well - it will all be published soon I suppose. However, what a waste of all those years.

There were pictures on the news of chains in the room Jay so I assume they were shackled and no doubt gagged, maybe something happened and their captor had to leave in a hurry and was careless, didn't something like that happen with the girl in Austria whose father had kept her captive for xx years.

Bit early to speculate but I wouldn’t be surprised if the child (presumably a daughter of the Kidnapped) played her part in their escape.

You just can’t imagine the turmoil both parents and victims must have gone through...and no doubt there will be a long road to recovery for them all...not that you could ever truly put this kind of experience behind you.

As usual we have judgemental replies on here without knowing the full facts. I'm sure these poor young girls would have escaped earlier if possible. I sincerely hope they can get over such an horrific experience though how they can I don't know.

I haven't had the time or the desire to look further into this - Jo says she has seen images in the media with shackles etc, I haven't had time to look etc.

However, with what is now coming to light it has been an horrific long term crime. I hope that the full weight of the law is brought to bear.

Time - as I so often say - is potentially the most valuable thing which any one of us possesses. The lost time cannot be 'reclaimed' - so what is hugely important now is that these women (and don't forget the 6 yr old child) are supported and assisted in adjusting to modern day life as gently as is possible.

this is more common than you would think, there have been several noteable cases over the years
it is not uncommon for the captives to develop Stockholm syndrome and actually fall in love with their captors or at least develop an affection for them, tis true, google it
I hope the courts move swiftly, so the victims can rebuild their lives quickly and move on

Amazing story and a wonderful result .. although it saddens me now as various people seem to be trying to point fingers at the police, social services etc. etc. I am sure if there had have been any clue then something would be done.

Hopefully they will make a movie of this, I think it would be fascinating to watch.

It is unimaginable that 3 young people have lost 10 years away from their families and there is a young child who has never known a proper family life. I would imagine the scars will be with then forever.
I wonder if they will even be able to form relationships in the future.

Em, You commented on the way the house was built. It certainly looks it may be in a poorer area but a vast number of houses in America are wood built. Usually they have massive cellars which are a 'mortgage' requirement in case of adverse weather conditions. Nowadays most people use them as games room or guest rooms. There was probably no luxury in this case.

Hi Andrea,

I think something possibly got 'lost in translation' - what I meant was that it looked pretty much run down, uncared for. I looked at the area between the front of the property and the road kerb - unkept grass, rough sort of concrete footpaths. Then there's the property itself with openings boarded up etc.

When it was younger, it was probably a nice detached family home - but these wooden properties over there are difficult to maintain, I'd much rather have bricks and mortar. I noted that the top part of the 'basement' you refer to seems to have breeze blocks and 'windows', but I have seen properties of this type with just the wood/boarding (shiplap ?) material.

It does look rickety though. We have friends in USA who have quite a big new property, but it's wooden - they can't understand our preference for bricks and mortar, and we can't understand their preference for wood.

Oh well - whatever - but the main thing is that these women can now be gently supported.

Em, I fully agree about the condition of the house , no wonder no attention was paid to it.
My sister lived in New York State for 50 years in a large wooden house which was all you saw in the area and the majority of her friends had never seen a brick house.
They need a lot of maintenance to keep them looking good . The funniest thing I saw was when friends were renovating their house. They just took a whole wall down and extended outwards then put the timber back up.
