Now't So Queer as Romance

Unread post by Jan Rosser »

Apparently folk in Doncaster read more romantic novels than anywhere else in the UK (article in the Times today). Is this true? The journalist says if she was married to "a taciturn, ungrateful, blunt, housework- resistant obese Yorkshireman she too would turn to a fictional world of dashing heroes and sunset kisses".

Flipping heck bit blunt isn't she

Now come on you Yorkshiremen defend yourselves please ;)

Maybe there's nowt else to do in Doncaster, I wouldn't know. I have only been there once - about 20 years ago, and my wife had her handbag stolen. :(

Ha Ha Jan, as someone who hails from Yorkshire and more to the point Doncaster I can only say this doesn't describe any of the men I know but in fairness I haven't lived there for the last 25 years nor am I married to a Yorkshireman

Interesting though ... on our local news last night it stated there are more Lottery winners in Yorkshire than anywhere else in the Country so maybe these ungrateful, blunt, housework resistant obese Yorkshiremen aren't such a bad catch after all

Oh Tinker that's not nice - what a waste of a good book ;)

Jo - glad you were amused - interesting part of the survey was that the "Shades of Grey trilogy" (classed as romantic fiction  ) and of course a best seller probably accounted for the high figures - now what does that say about the good people of Doncaster ;)

The Yorkies will be on soon to defend themselves...Just as soon as they get back from their weekly pigeon club meeting, down at t'pub, having been out with their t'whippets, in their t'flat caps and they have had a mug of strong Yorkshire Tea and after their evening meal, which, as it's Thursday they are allowed to 'lick road clean wit' tongue and then after they have taken t'boots off they will reply.

And woa betide you when they do. :D

The quote in the original post here makes me think - at least people in Doncaster don't rush to be glued to the gogglebox. Good for them.

Em :)

Proving their romantic nature, a Yorkshireman once said to me "A woman's place is in the kitchen, except when she's bringing the coal in".

And of you fancy a good night out, the same man told me that Yorkshire folk were "much like Aberdonians, stripped of their generosity."

Was in Doncaster yesterday.. Well the station on my way home from Rotherham and did not see any likely looking lottery winners (Doncaster was said to be the luckiest town) or anyone looking remotely romantic... So perhaps that would account for the need to revert to fiction
Disclaimer - Other towns are probably just the same...... ;)

I'm there every few weeks Jenni as my brother still lives there and I've never seen any likely looking lottery winners either  you're probably right that other towns are just the same, I walk around our town and despair at some of the sights I see :o

I shall be buying my lottery tickets there though in future
