Children can sleep through smoke alarms
Not just children either ... I once slept through ours going off (which is right outside the bedroom door) ... fortunately Julie managed to wake me up and after a quick investigation I found nothing. The alarm would not shut up though so I pulled it off the ceiling opened a window and threw it outside and went back to bed.

In my experience the majority of young children, once they are asleep, will sleep through almost anything and everything so this research does not particularly surprise me.

There may also be an argument that if children were to wake up by hearing a smoke alarm then because they may not know what it was or what to do could, in fact, put them in more danger.

can only shut ours up by removing the battery

We recently had smoke and heat detectors installed they run off the electric with battery back up and when battery runs down they flash red if you ignore it they flash and beep
What we have found is unlike battery ones these do not go off at every time a piece of toast gets burnt or there is a bit of smoke around

That shouldn't make any difference, the detector is the same.

it's steam that sets ours off - specially the shower in the summer

HaB, our new ones are the same, I have vague memories of reading something about them being interconnected which may make a difference ... all I know is I get far fewer false alarms than with the self fix stand alone units ... maybe that is the difference between a £2 smoke detector and a £30 smoke detector (yes I had to replace one a few years back .. and no it wasn't the one I threw out the window).

Ours are interconnecting one goes off they all will its enough to wake the dead when I test it lol
