Judging people by their names

Unread post by Kendhni »

Story here
Someones name may build a pre-conceived picture in my mind but generally it isn't anything negative ... more to do with physical attributes than personality) ... but I would like to think that I have never and will never judge someone purely by their name.

I don't like many of the daft names celebrities use to try to get themselves a few more column inches but, if anything, I feel sorry for the child.

I notice the last time I saw the poll about 30% agreed with Katie Hopkins ... higher than I expected.

Ken somebody just sent me the youtube link for this. I am often amazed at the ridiculous names that people land their children with, there is a Chilli at my childrens' school FGS! I think the worst I've heard is Trojan for a little boy. The woman in the clip maintains that her children aren't allowed to play with kids that have names she deems unacceptable eg Tyler, as this must mean that they are from a lower class background than herself. She's an absolute joke and bears an unfrtunate resemblance to a horse (as many snobs do strangely enough). The best bit was when she ruled out children with names "based on location" as playmates for her children. When it was pointed out that she has a daughter called India, she claimed it was 'absolutely not geographical'

hear a thing on the radio about kids names and it seems all the older/old fashioned names are making comeback
you have to pity some poor kid, who's stupid inconsiderate parents saddled them with a bloody silly name like India or Chardonnay

It's even funnier when the parents spell Chardonnay incorrectly eg Chardonay and insist it's correct!

I compile a Birthday Greeting column for U12s in our local newspaper and also deal with wedding reports (names of bridesmaids, etc).

I've looked at the Katie Hopkins (?) tweets (reproduced on Yahoo news) and agree with a lot she says - Destiny with Mum holding a fag. Bit of an own goal though with a child called India.

I think most of us make assumptions about particular names e.g. Rupert, Piers etc etc.

Our daughter has just completed a couple of induction days at a rather posh Grammar school. I jokingly asked if she spotted any potential boyfriends to which she replied...”Piers” was rather nice”
Now as most of you know I never judge a person until I’ve had chance to look them in the eye and even then I’m inclined to give them the benefit of doubt until I get to know them better... but when my daughter mentioned the name Piers I automatically though POSH BOY especially so in the surrounding of a grammar school.

I tend to think some people chose names in an attempt to make their child stand out from thier peers, others choose names that reflect their parent’s social standing...We chose “Abigail” because it means... Father’s Joy!

Are you sure she wasn't talking about his assortment of eye, ear, nose and oral jewellery and actually said 'pierced'?

I judge the parents who laden their children with made up names. Our local paper has a bonny baby competition which features pages of photos of various ages. The majority of these poor children have the most ridiculous names which must be an embarrassment to them in later life. Recent examples were Maybot, Shay-lee and Marow.

My daughter informed us yesterday that one of her new classmates come September is named Charm. I asked if her surname is Bracelet but Paul assured me it is D'Imsure :D

Does anybody remember an old radio show that played with peoples names and cam eup with statements such as

Mr & Mrs Filler and their daughter, who was into DIY, Polly
Mr & Mrs Down and their sycophantic son, Neil
etc.

I actually know the following
- Tamara Knight
- Michael Hunt
- Liam Malone

names do tend to acquire a stereotype..

As a teacher ( a few years ago) - every Darren and Wayne, Gary and Barry was a troublemaker; every Tracey, Sharon, Mandy was wet.

A friend added, " All Helens are knowalls (she obviously taught brighter children than I did!)

It made choosing names for our children very difficult : OH was suggest one and it would be rejected with , "Nooooooo I taught one of those and he was a sod!"

Hi Ken

I can’t be sure about that but I don’t think she’s got the name’s mixed up, beside I’ve already warned her never to bring home a boyfriend of that description...if she did, he would need to add reinforced “balls” to his collection of jewellery

One of my grandsons is called Ramsay Noble.
After my dad. My dad was Noble Ramsay.
I did ask my daughter to think about it..long and hard.
But his name suits him.
Before the twins were born and my dil told me that they would be called Max and Ruby.(not after the rabbits on tv  )
But I have to say...again their names really suit them.... Max is a little bruiser already....and Ruby has red hair and is a little delicate thing(Ruby red we call her)
I once had in my care twins called Bradley and Bailey.
Everyone called them Bradford and Bingly .... not intentionally..it just seemed to come out.

I have always been a great believer that a given name helps to mould a person's character.

The New Scientist coined the term "nominative determinism" about 20 years ago, primarily relating to a person's name and chosen occupation

I thought that was for surnames Cubie. And Meg, you obviously misheard your friend saying 'all Helens are extremely intelligent and very nice with it'.

The worst I heard was in Liverpool airport when a lady with a loud voice shouted in a VERY Scouse accent "Come here our Frodo" , and then our friend's daughter told us about the child in her class whose name topped them all ...Pocohantis McGinty!!

I have come across various people with 'unfortunate' names. With some of them their parents should have known better, e.g. Shona Legg, others who were overtaken by events, e.g. Donald Duck (he was older than the cartoon character) and some through events and marriage, e.g. Minnie Cooper.

I also came across a lady whose full name was Emma May Faint, and decided that no daughter of mine was ever going to have 'May' as a mddle name. This proved to be a wise decision, as my elder daughter's married name is.....
Begg!
