' MM ' ...
Please also note that your edit function will time out after about 15 minutes but will save you the need to post a second time if the original contains any errors, any duplicate postings that you do generate however can be deleted by your good self within the same time scale.
Thereafter one of the Mods will, if it is noticed or indeed requested, delete the erroneous posting on your behalf.

How do I follow up on a posting that has been reported by me already when the posting still remains on line? I am not able to report a particular post more than once.
The thread is locked so I cannot draw attention to it directly.
Signedn
An unhappy Derek Kane who has already had two posts edited (which are not directed at any member in relation to the terms underclass and smoking) and yet named abuse towards him is tolerated.

Oh Lordie!
I was pleased to see MM back on here because I generally respect his knowledge and am interested in his views, even though I often do not agree with him.
The only issue I've ever had with his posts is his use of language such as "lightweights" and "under class" to describe those with a different viewpoint and his apparent difficulty in seeing why such language, although not personally directed, is upsetting to others.
I do hope this problem, if that is not too strong a word, is not going to rear its head here and that MM will accept the wisdom of the Mods in balancing competing views and personalities, something I've felt they're pretty good at to date.

Mervyn or/and Trish:
(I know not which of you two posted the reply or whether you sit at the keyboard together and type in iso-viewpoint.
My use of the appellation 'Lightweight' has in this forum not been applied to any name member(s). In the P&O forum it was directed to certain members who would elect to abuse me.
My use of the appellation 'Underclass' has in this forum been only applied to the majority in the rump of the UK popualtion who still smoke and is a well-known social-classification. I have never applied it to any forum member (or P&O forum member).
On the other hand being described as a pompous snob by some mebers I do find offensive.
I reject completely those who self-elect to be offended by such expressions which are not even directed at them.

Sorry MM, but I rest my case! (Mervyn at the keyboard by the way).
I know that is how you intend to apply those expressions, but equally you know how they offend people. I also accept it is wrong to name-call in your direction, but two wrongs don't make a right! I sincerely believe your persistent unnecessary use of such terms (you make your points perfectly eloquently without them) in the face of the evidence of upset caused (by self-elected or otherwise), contributes to the need others feel to attack you, as wrong as that may be too.
I'm sure our volunteer mods have better things to do than deal with reported post that could be so easily avoided if both sides in the debate avoided terms which their experience tells them will be inflamatory.

Pompous - 1. Affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important
Snob - 1. A person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people.
2. A person with an exaggerated respect for high social position who dislikes people or activities regarded as lower-class.

Derek, just because you don't refer to a person by name when you refer to the majority of the UK population that still smoke as the "underclasses" it doesn't alter the fact that you are offending people.The Monocled Mutineer wrote:Mervyn or/and Trish:

I am a smoker and it offends me, not that I would ever be childish enough to report you for it
I think we all know what your opinion of smokers is ... you have told us often enough and no doubt will continue to do so which is fine but you don't have to use offensive words to get your message across.

I have not said ALL smokers are "underclass".
However, as the percentage of the UK population who stIll smoke continues to drop an ever increasing proportion of that minority are drawn from the underclass and asocial.

Re: Reporting Posts or/and Members
Sorry Derek, but you just don't get it do you? To take the smoking example, I don't smoke and I prefer to avoid smoky areas if I can. However, smoking is an addiction and some people, try as they might, find it incredibly difficult to stop. I know a number of people who smoke and do not consider them to be of any different class to me, and for that matter I do not consider them to be in an "underclass" relative to you.
No-one has a problem with the fact you don't like smokers - it is your persistent use of the term "underclass" and others like it that hack people off - and it really is not necessary to get your point across.
The way you behave is rather like a young boy I used to know who would persistently taunt his brother by doing things which, while not terribly bad in themselves, he knew the brother didn't like. Then when the taunted brother snapped and gave him a well deserved clip round the ear would go running to his parents. Once the other boy had been reprimanded the taunting would begin all over again.
As I said before, I respect your views, while I do not agree with all of them. I could even tolerate your use of language which you know will offend if it was not for the way you rush to report posts when someone fights back in a way you don't like.
The very fact that one of your first posts on here is on the topic of how to report posts and members says it all.

Re: Reporting Posts or/and Members
In my opinion, nothing anyone will say will stop Derek from stating his views and only Admin can do that by insisting that he ceases to use terms which people find offensive. But it is a free country and people can say what they like in a general way. If I was a smoker I would not 'own' his comments because I would not consider myself in the terms he uses, and I don't think smokers should own his comments if they don't believe they apply to them. If someone came up to you in the street whilst you were smoking and called you a fool, would you start arguing the toss with them? I think people would walk away. The problem is that whilst some want Derek not to say those things in the first place, other people reacting and arguing and trying to shut him up does not make it better, only worse. As a footnote, I personally am glad to see Derek here but it's a shame that he has already felt the need to report posts.

Mo2013:
Thank you for your various posts and your 'welcome' to this forum.
The only posts I have reported are those that stated BEFORE I had joined this forum that I was a 'pompous snob' and those who quoted from the original post and either supported or repeated the abusive appellation.
~~~
Mervyn (I presume):
My early posting about 'reporting' was to clear the Augean Stables of abuse directed at me. I note that many gallant members deplored these attacks and I thank them for that.
I have absolutely no intention of reporting anyone else for posting their opinion on any matter bar those that use directed, named abuse at a member(s) or post genuinely disgusting, immoral or criminal posts (eg racism, homophobia).
I have been asked to reconsider the term 'u-n--cla--s' and use other terminology. Somewhat reluctantly I will and therefore state that in my view the minority of the UK population (circa 22%) who still smoke who are drawn from socio-economic classes A, B, C1 & C2 are increasingly becoming a minority of a minority.
Interestingly, the number of cigarettes being smoked illegally continues to grow and is mainly attributable to socio-economics classes below C2 for asocial or financial reasons.
For example:
Purchasing non-fiscal marked cigarettes (ie smuggled cigarettes)
Purchasing stolen cigarettes.
Purchasing counterfeit cigarettes (even more dangerous than the genuine brands)
U18 consumption (all classes, although a smoking parent acts as a role model for a child)
Smoking in areas where smoking is prohibited (eg the semi open concourses of the shopping centre in the town I work in ban smoking but it is continuosly being flouted).
Also, discarding spent cigarettes by many smokers is littering as far as I am concerned and also cause fires in litter bins when some think they are being "thoughful" stubbing out there rather than on the ground.
