i-pads Do Not Bounce!

Unread post by david63 »

Just a word of warning to anyone with an i-pad - if you drop it on a tiled kitchen (other rooms are available) floor do not expect it to remain in one piece.

Mrs63 decided to test this out the other day with her i-pad mini and as a result she now has a very interested "cracked glass" pattern on the screen.

The good news is that the repair is covered by our contents insurance (with zero excess) so rather than the £100+ that it would have cost to have it repaired it will be fixed or replaced for nothing.

I wish we had had zero excess on our contents insurance when I knocked a mug of tea over the laptop recently. We had to pay £100 excess and then we lost a further £50 as it was 2 years old. I wondered if the insurance will now go up next time as we have made a claim.

We have been told that we will loose our No Claims Discount next year - but as the cost of repair would have been more than the NCD then it did not seem to be an issue

I also tripped over our riven slate tiles inthe kitchen and smashed my ipad screen. Instead of repairing it, my insurance gave me a new ipad :D whichwas lovely, but I had to find all my apps and bookmarks again!

If anybody is unfortunate enough to crack there i-gimmick then there are cheaper repairers working locally in Southampton. Just ask Robert for details.

In theory (I have not tried this out yet!) if you have your i-pad backed up to i-cloud then when/if you get a new one once you log in to your i-cloud account all your settings/data/apps will be reset to as before.

There may well be cheaper ones oop north - I just stopped looking once the insurance company said they would pay.

Incidentally I am talking about an i-pad mini which I believe are more difficult to repair hence the higher cost

Nothing worse that getting a brand new iPad for gratis then having to chase around finding all your apps and book marks again hey Gill. A pretty poor show on the insurance company's part if you ask me for not loading up your apps before sending it out to you :sarcasm: ;)

Oh dear David. I have said before that if I have a phone or camera, they have to be waterproof and shockproof preferably M..... proof as I have a tendency to drop things :( I was considering an Ipad but my son thinks a Kindle fire would suit me better. Can anyone vouch for them being waterproof, shockproof and most importantly drop-proof

My wife has a kindle fire and a normal kindle, and I have an IPad, we are both getting a bit doddery on our feet, but have not managed to drop them yet, to test how proof they are.

However on the first day of our recent holiday in North Wales, the on/off switch on my camera broke, luckily with the camera switched on, so I could still use it, although not at its wides aperture, just had to keep taking the battery out to turn it off, and preserve the life of the battery, although I do have a spare battery.

Had not thought about claiming on the insurance, I rang Panasonic camera repairs, part will cost approx £20, labour charge £40 ( + VAT I would imagine), that's an over the phone estimate, a full price will be given once they have the camera in their possession

Stephen enjoyed looking at your photo Album on Flik'r.

Delboy I'm not quite doddery yet, but for some reason I have been through numerous phones over the years dropping them here there and everywhere. The camera I have at present is waterproof and has a strap I can put on my wrist. I think my problem has always been juggling with too many things at once. (Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) :D

I'm saying nothing, but I wonder if they have something similar for a Kindle fire. :shifty:

Our son left his on top of his car and drove off. He was absolutely devastated. His insurance came up trumps and paid out in full. He is an IT specialist but even he was amazed when he plugged his new I pad in and down loaded from I cloud all his settings were there, his apps, e mails everything just as if he had turned on his old ipad.

He keeps nagging me to back mine up which I do but very infrequently.

The obvious solution is to fit deepest shag pile wall to wall (or kitchen unit to kitchen unit) in the kitchen.

Well, I have to admit that would probably work, but it's not terribly practical in other ways. :-) :-)
