It didn't even cross my mind that I had no replies. I'm not one to seek attention, as you well know.

There is obviously allot of money in scrap these days, as the salvage operation has already cost in excess of 600 million Euros, and rising.

It's because, although upright, she is basically still sitting on the seabed - albeit an artifical one created to keep her stable. In the next stage more large boxes will be fixed to the other side. Then water will be pumped out of them, creating the world's biggest water wings, and she will rise to a more normal depth in the water. I imagine at that stage there will have to be great care to prevent environmental damage as much of the polluted water currently inside will flow out.

She is still sitting on the bottom, just now upright - and that's how deep the water is.

The unfortunate residents of Giglio have to look at this hulk for goodness knows how many more months. They must wonder if it will ever be over. It now looks worse than before. What a terrible tragedy this has been at all levels.

Well, it won't be much longer now. All the sponsons (buoyancy tanks) are now in place, and final testing of the pumps etc being done. According to Costa Crocieri, refloating could take place as soon as 10 days time.

We should be able to hear the great sigh of relief from the island of Giglio.
I very much hope that it all goes to plan. It will be an amazing feat of engineering. The salvage team should be applauded.

With regards to the outcome of the Monitoring Observatory meeting held today, Costa Crociere has released the following statement.

The refloating operation is planned to start at 6 am on Monday, July 14. During the first stage, the Concordia will be refloated about 2 meters up off the platforms and moved 30 meters towards the east with the assistance of tugs. The ship will then be securely moored and technicians will be able to complete the attachment and tensioning of the last cables and chains, and to lower the starboard sponsons to their final position. The actual refloating will then begin, raising the ship one deck at a time, from deck 6 to deck 3. The whole operation is expected to take about 6 or 7 days to complete. The departure of the Concordia from Giglio is currently scheduled for July 21.

With the wreck expected to be towed away tomorrow, all being well, I've just been surfing the net and came across these "interesting" pictures, allegedly of the inside of Concordia since she was righted.

The salvage company I believe denies issuing any such pictures.

What I find interesting is that many of the shots show exactly what you'd expect. Upturned jumbled furniture, broken plates etc.

But what about the one of the bar, seemingly with jars and bottles still standing upright on it. Isn't that remarkable after the ship has been lying on her side for so long?

And the piano with the sheet music lying on top of it?

Or the wheeled stage equipment still upright and in place, with again what looks like a book or magazine lying on a table beside it?

But what are really extraordinary for me are the shots of a lounge with not only the furniture still pretty much in place (bolted down perhaps) and the blinds unruffled by the experience, but more than two years after the engine room and its generating equipment went under the sea, the lights are still on. Amazing!

No, I don't think it's a plastic flower - there are items of disposable tableware (napkins or somesuch), and the paper is showing absolutely no signs of the distress which one would most definitely expect to see - QED I reckon somebody with a distinct lack of taste has cobbled this together somehow.
