CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
Dear Forumeers,
The Festive season is fast approaching. When it comes to Christmas I am very much 50 going on 10 and I readily admit that I love the tackiness, the commerciality and the obcene overindulgence of it all.
Like many in the lovely city of Hull (even the rough bit Soiled Nightie lives in) I will be putting up festive lights on my house. I know that Keefy Onelife will be doing the same because like me he is very much a young chap at heart, whilst Soiled Nightie, who is a bit of a miserable old Scrooge, will not.
Will it be a HO HO HO from you or a Bah Humbug?
Kindest Regards
Rob aka AOTH

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
Definitely Ho Ho Ho.
We have a large-ish beech tree in our front garden that will be dressed with soft white lights and a Christmas tree in a pot just outside the front door that will be similarly lit.
We only moved into this cul de sac seven days before last Christmas and the first night it was wonderful to see it, with almost all the houses having made the effort. It will be really lovely to be properly a part of it this year. The lights will be switched on from December 1st until twelfth night.

I'd just as soon not bother.... however, SWMBO wants them up, and the SIL is decorating the tree so I'll just keep a low profile....

HO HO HO from me, as usual we will have the outside of our Bungalow dressed with festive lights, plus a large tree inside all lit up.
I love everything about Christmas, including as I drive around seeing all the houses lit up with festive lights.

Most definitely Ho Ho Ho.
On dark dreary nights whole streets change their appearance with twinkling lights and Santas sitting on roofs. How can anyone be Bah Humbug
Xmaslisa, It is the angels that make someone else's Xmas so much nicer.

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
We will put some lights up this year because our Grandson is coming for Christmas day, and I think the tree with lights will be coming down from the loft too. For me, it is the Christmas Carols and Anthems which make Christmas, especially anything by John Rutter, or Harold Darke's 'In the bleak mid winter' which sung properly sends a chill down my spine. The lights are nice though, then at new year we all turn to face bleak January with the hope that we will have another healthy year and peace will prevail.

Only a briefly lit candle is sufficient to ensure the sun stays alight and does not plunge us into eternal darkness.
What i do like is those crazies who hook up a nuclear power station to their xmas lights in an attempt to win the naffest lights competition.
The best lights in my area are tiny white ones in a garden tree. Like a magical cloud of stars in the darkness. Very understated and knock the spots off all the multi colour flashing rubbish.

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
We have lights on our tree in the lounge, yes - but we have never had outside lights; we've never done lights in windows either.
However, we are starting to look at outdoor lights for next year, which will go in the back garden I expect. I've seen some lovely reindeer (don't want anything garish or too bright), and we'll probably buy those after the end of the year when the price is reduced. However, whilst I could possibly at a stretch extend the idea of reindeer (they move too!) possibly to a polar bear (but I don't really think so); I can't see the relevance of penguins, trains or dogs.
Don't fancy illuminated santas or snowmen, so I think it'll just be reindeer - but lights, yes please ..... tastefully and in moderation.

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
I'm afraid I am a bit of a misery at Christmas for personal reasons - every year I tell myself it will be better but the loss is still raw however I do make an effort and I have a tree with lights indoors and a wreath with lights in the porch which looks very pretty. I have lights on a fir tree in the garden all year round but need sun to make them work
My neighbours make up for my lack of enthusiasm with flashing lights and a window display full of Christmassy things.
Spending time with my family and particularly my grandchildren will give me all the "sparkle" I need

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
i am not a lover of flashing lights nor those that are coloured, indoors nor out. Inside we will have two large trees, one decorated in a gold and cream theme in the conservatory and the other cream and purple in the sitting room. I also have a small 2' tree in the hallway. But no tinsel anywhere - I hate it!

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
For many years now our village has had trees outside houses. We all have wall brackets - ours is above the front door - so the trees are at an angle and most decorated with white lights - it used to be all white lights but we have some renegades now! Who on earth thought blue lights had anything to do with Christmas? One year we walked round the village counting the trees - they are all about 3-4ft - and we got to over a hundred. I think it's more now though. Outside the village some houses do decorate with various Father Christmases, Reindeer etc. but in the village it's just the trees and at night it does look wonderful.
We have a real tree in the sitting room, as tall as I can fit in. Last year we weren't here for Christmas Day so only had a small tree on a table - looked awful. I use decorations which I've added to over the years, but the theme is red and gold. I also have an angel which goes on top of the tree. I bought it back in the mid-sixties when I was nursing in London - I think it came from Selfridges by memory. It was always on the tree when I lived at home but now my parents are no longer with us it goes on the top of our tree - couldn't think of a Christmas tree without it.
What sort of tree do those of you who have a real tree buy? I still prefer the smell of the traditional Norway Spruce but I do like the elegance of the Nordman Firs and the fact that the needles don't drop. Although the last few years the needles on our Norway Spruce have been fine. It will soon be time for the traditional buying of the tree. This means my husband accompanying me - I need his van now we no longer have an estate car and a tree won't go inside our saloon car - and the annual argument about the size of the tree. He wants the first one we see - and not too large. I want to look at all of them and I certainly want one at least 6ft. I have worked out that if I stand with my arm raised as high as I can get it then that's the size that will fit in our sitting room - very technical!

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
Hiya Robbie,
I’m just off out to return a tub of tile cement to Wicks... guess what I’m going to do with the money...Yes! I’m going to get some more twinkle lights.....
In fact I’m going to start putting them up next week as I don’t like doing it when the weather gets to cold....squeak squeak.
Btw when you meet the OH again please have a word with her ...she won’t allow me to have the Christmas tree on the garage roof this year so I’m going with reindeers instead...that’ll teach her.
Best wishes from your mate down South.

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
I put a tree up in the conservatory ( artificial ) we are always away for Xmas so I like the house to appear occupied, I also have lights for the outside but it is usually dependant on how much time we have whether they are put up or not.
My cabin will be decorated and I take a Xmas tree and various battery operated lights with me Ho Ho Ho ...... I can't wait

Re: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YES OR NO?
I often spend Christmas week/New Year alone so sometimes I don't bother with any decorations at all. Of course Christmas Day etc I see my family and friends but being in the forces my husband spends lots of time away. He won't book holidays that time of year as we both agree it's nicer for his colleagues with children to have the time at home. This year he doesn't know what he'll be doing but I do a few hours care for elderly who just need a bit of help and companionship so I hope to do a few visits on Christmas Day, it's horrible to think of so many spending the whole season alone.
I'm not bah humbug though honest, just a pain getting the house all festive when it's just me and the dog that see it and when we do make the effort for visitors I can't wait to get the place back to how I like it, usually Jan 2nd !.
