Slow Cookers - whole chicken.

Unread post by Frank Manning »

We use our slow cooker quite a bit, and today we cooked a part leg of lamb in it and it almost crumbled when it came out after 3 hours. Our daughter cooks a whole chicken in hers; has anyone else tried this? We wonder if chicken will get up to the required temperature to be safe, but DD has had no problem so far.

I should have thought a couple of hours on high, and then 3-4 hours on low should do it. I assume you'd be browning it in a pan to start with, which would set a bit of fierce heat on its way through the flesh. After four hours on low, my slow cooker's pot is too hot to touch, so provided at least one end of your bird is open, the hot air will circulate through to the inside.

We wouldn't cook chicken in ours unless it was properly cleaned and boned.

I would, and do, always test meat with a thermometer to avoid any under/over cooking

I cook small whole chickens in mine, but on high for the whole time, as per my cook book's instructions.
