Have We All Survived?

Unread post by david63 »

I trust that all is well with everyone today and that we have all survived the gales (except those who are on a cruise and will have missed it all)

Quite windy and stormy here but some bright and dry spells as well.

Not seen any signs of any damage yet :silent:

It has calmed down now, but it was dreadful this morning. I have never had to rescue so many things.

I just hope everyone is safe, damaged objects can be replaced :)

Ten miles down the road from "Onelife Towers", and all is fairly quiet now after a squally early afternoon. No damage sustained here. Sorry to hear about the pane pain Keith.

It has been breezy in Poole, but nothing more than that and it was quite a bit warmer by mid afternoon.
If the weather charts are right it will be a nice weekend in the south.

Still very blustery here on the Gower Coast, and very cold too. We have had some damage to plants and shrubs and a few cracked pots, but nothing compared to parts of the country.

We've had quite a few trees down over here, and can you believe a wooden stable was blown onto one of the roads blocking it. I think it landed in one piece too :o
My husband checked around the house and thankfully all seems intact

Hull is expecting three lots of very high winds plus tides and houses on the Norfolk coast are on stand-by for flooding ... a combo of high winds and a spring tide according to latest News broadcasts.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

The wind is only half the story.

The east coast is now expecting the biggest storm surge for 60 years.

The 1953 floods caused massive devastation and loss of life. These days weather forecasting is more advanced, so people are being evacuated and flood defences are better, but some places may see as bad or possibly worse water levels than '53

Welshie's just driven up to Scunthorpe and said it was a scary journey.

I'm thinking of all of you folks who are in the affected areas. Be safe.

This is the latest weather report for our area Clacton On Sea and the East Coast, the worst is expected at about 1/30 am, they are talking of the sea surge rising by 6ft. Lucky for us we are on High ground.

In Norfolk, 9,000 homes are being evacuated as local officials attempt to stem the damage from the coastal surge.

A further 1,000 properties are to be evacuated in affected areas in Suffolk and some residents in Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, are also being urged to leave their homes.

Local officials are setting up emergency accommodation facilities and handing out sandbags to help people protect their homes, police said.

Evacuation point: Jaywick Community Resource Centre.

A spokesman said in some areas sea levels could be higher than those during the devastating floods of 1953 - which battered the east coast of England and claimed the lives of hundreds of people.

Defences built since then - including the Thames and Hull barriers - mean that many parts of the country are much better protected, he said. However, some coastal flood defences could be "overtopped" by the combined effect of high tides, high winds and a large tidal surge, he said.

saw 7 overturned wagons today
got stuck in 3 motorway closures
saw umpteen near misses

and still people drive like morons

it is okay in Hull apart from some fence panels blowing down next door, will need to keep an eye on the tides though

In our Hospital grounds a tree uprooted and crushed 2 cars and damaged 2 others. Fortunately there was no one close by at the time.
I have just come home and the wind seems to have dropped quite a bit .
I hope those in coastal areas have a reasonable night, it must be dreadful having to move out of your home not knowing what the next few hours will bring.

Hi Alan,

Absolutely shattered would be more descriptive  funny, I was in the house at the time making the fire up; I heard a faint crash but thought no more about it. Only when I ventured outside did I notice the gaping hole in the green house roof. Being the ever resorful chap, I covered it over with an old campaign banner I’d got tucked away...I knew it would come in useful (that’s why I didn’t put it in the loft Frank) If only women had as much foresight as us men

To be honest Alan, I'd already got two broken panes so it will give me the kick up the ar*e I need to get somthing done about it.

Regards

Keith

I live in Boston and we had high winds all day then floods tonight, luckily it didn't reach us but it wasn't very far away. Another high tide at 8am tomorrow and then another tomorrow night. We are not out of the woods yet. All important stuff moved upstairs just in case.

From all accounts and what we have seen on the television we seem to have escaped quite lightly in this part of Cumbria. Yesterday we had very high winds which blew over all the paper recycling bins so there was newspaper all over the place. It was still very windy when we took some friends over to Penrith to catch the Glasgow-London train. Of course Scotland seemed to be closed but they were lucky to get what was probably the last train out of Scotland. Nine hours later and after many changes they managed to get back home to Ashford in Kent but it seemed to have been quite a chaotic journey which had thrown the whole system out of sync.

After leaving Penrith we drove home in clear blue skies and sunshine (12.30). It was quite unbelievable really.

It's all calm here today but they must be worrying times for those who live in flood threatened areas. They have my sympathies.
I was taught to be cautious

Was a tad windy in Tyne & Wear. River Tyne flooded on Newcastle Quayside. Wetherspoons was flooded.

It was very windy here in Derbyshire yesterday for about 6 hours, at one point I thought our conservatory roof was going to come off .. it was pretty scary.

It must be awful for all those on the East coast, take care and be safe

We lost part of a greenhouse roof - and we found out about this when a neighbour kindly returned it to us!

We did need to make some phone calls to family members on the east coast yesterday, and things were a bit difficult. Hopefully they will have a better day today.
