NIMBY......well actually you can
Dear Forumeers,
I came home this evening to find a leaflet from the local Tory Councillors pushed through my door.
They were up in arms about a planning application to site a wind turbine close to where I work and not far from where I live. They would like us all to go on line and sign a petition against this potential blight on the pretty West Hull villages in which we live.
Well they can b***er off......bring it on....I like them....I think they look magnificent.....and my only objection is that the plan is only for one of them.
HO HO HO
Regards
Rob aka AOTH

Hi AoTH,
Well can I join your club - I think they look elegant and graceful. I really enjoy watching them turn effortlessly in the breeze, and more than one - just watching and waiting for them all to turn together at the same speed etc (in sync) for a short while - it's so relaxing and almost mesmerising.
We're starting to plan short trips in the UK for 2014, hopefully we'll be up your way (sort of) and it might even be constructed by then!
It's just that gentle 'wooshing' noise - when I close my eyes it almost sounds like being at sea on the balcony.
Fingers crossed for you.
Em

I think they're ace oh Soiled One. It probably won't happen as there is a Waitrose across the road from the proposed site and all the Tory Nimby pensioners will object to it spoiling the ambiance of their free coffee.Dark Knight wrote:AOTH

Hi Robbie,
Not sure l would like one directly outside my front door but l wouldn't have any objections to wind turbines if they were placed sympathetically as not to be too intrusive to the neighbours.
You may recall "some time back" about my visit to the wind farm at Carno....what a impressive sight that is, and one that l wouldn't mind seeing repeated across the whole of the country as l also find them esteticaly pleasing...from a distance. Hopfully in the not to distant future you'll get to see lots of them in them yonder hills in Wales
Regards

I'll pack a few hundred of them up Admiral and let you have them. We seem to have more than our fair share up here, especially out in the Solway and I hate them. I would be almost content if they were effective but they produce so little electricity they hardly seem worth the bother of putting them up.
I was taught to be cautious

You would have thought it was going to be the end of the world when 3 were planned for our village. Now, most say they have no problems with them, and much prefer them to the ubiquitous pylons.
Its just a pity that the landowner is making a small fortune with no benefit accruing to village facilities.

I think when the weather improves it might just be a nice walk and picnic option - finding some wind turbines, great picnic, smashing photo opps, and above all I can sit back and imagine it's a sea day (minus of course the obligatory stroll past the blasted onboard shops).
However, I still privately wonder if wave power isn't a better way - tides will always turn (especially that Severn Bore), but you can't always count on the wind.

They can build one near me and pay me compensation - lovely. Plus more comps for the fracking well they drill to fuel the power stations when the wind ain't blowing, which as we all know, will be on freezing february days when the demand for leccie is at its height!.

There's a wind turbine by the M25 near Watford that's floodlit at night. Work that one out.

I've got no problem with them - apart from the fact that, as has already been said, they don't actually generate that much power so are probably not cost-effective. The idea is good in principle.

I assume they are fairly useless, as are most things beloved of the greens.
My vote goes for more coal powered generation with, of course, carbon dioxide capture, they could maybe store it in abandoned coal mines which might help prevent any fires due to methane seapage.
You see all it needs is a bit of lateral thinking to solve one problem with another.
