Yet another phone scam?
Got a call on my mobile yesterday - though I was on the landline at the time, so immediately rejected it.
It came from an unknown number to me 0752 0905075, so I didn't call it back. A good job, it transpires.....

Looks like they ring you, then ring off quickly. Those people who ring them back may get a big bill for doing so!

that is the area code for Exeter.
cos we have caller display I ignore it, but OH picked it up and there was just a dialling tone.

I adopt the policy that if I miss a call and it is important they will either leave a message or call back.
Mr Google is good for letting you know if they are scam/spam calls.

Indeed David. I found out the potential scam by simply typing the number into Google.david63 wrote:I adopt the policy that if I miss a call and it is important they will either leave a message or call back.

Re: Yet another phone scam?
Some cold callers use an automated system that dials several numbers simultaneously and when the first person picks up the phone it drops all the others.

cold callers/emailers should be taken out and shot (preferably with a bow and arrow - arrows can be reused)

Just had a really upsetting phone call about a car accident to my husband - I was taken aback when the caller asked for him by name - I informed him that my husband died almost eight years ago - he said the accident happened within the last three years and they would amend their records. No apology and obviously no idea how this has affected me - do these people have no conscience - no they are simply in it for the money - I agree with Shiney boy they should all be shot.

The problem with TPS is that it only applies to calls originating in the UK - most of these types of call originate offshore (many in India)Stephen wrote:

Stephen. We are registered with the Preference service and we are ex directory. We still get "those" calls. I assume that there are many sources of telephone numbers.
My OH shouts "Who are you" and "What is your Number" without the number you can't report them to the Preference Service. They never give it. I just put the phone down without speaking. It is very annoying.

we also are TPS listed. We have caller display - if it comes up unknown/unavailable/international we ignore.jay-ell71 wrote:Stephen. We are registered with the Preference service and we are ex directory. We still get "those" calls. I assume that there are many sources of telephone numbers.

Some come up with numbers and we've learnt to recognise the scam ones - no amount of telling them seems to work.
More recently they are coming up WITHHELD which is a nuisance cos we have to pick those up - close friends and JD's office are WITHHELD numbers

Re: Yet another phone scam?
I am registered with TPS but as David says calls do get through - I also have caller display and usually ignore a number I don't know or if "International" comes up but came in from the garden and picked the phone up without looking. The number had a 020 prefix which is Greater London - I'm ok now just hoppin mad

A far better idea is to calmly say " Hello, could you hold on for a moment "jay-ell71 wrote:Stephen. We are registered with the Preference service and we are ex directory. We still get "those" calls. I assume that there are many sources of telephone numbers.

Then put the phone to one side and go make a cup of tea ... they will eventually hang up due to the cost of a wasted call. Another ruse is to tell them you are on welfare.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Jan - a lot of international calls look as if they start 020 but are actually 0020.

Re: Yet another phone scam?
On my mobile it's possible to block a call - so if I get a call which I don't know the identity of the caller (or if I answer it in mistake), I can go into the call list, press on the number involved and get the option to either block call or delete. I press the block call option and get a message that the number involved has been blocked.
It's great.

Re: Yet another phone scam?
If you have TalkTalk there are several free options on their website for blocking cold calls and 'number withheld' calls. I would imagine other service providers will have something similar.
I can't say how effective they are because ever since using these options we haven't had any cold or 'number withheld' calls.
Jan, I'm so sorry to hear of your experience. What a disgraceful thing to do irrespective of the fact you had lost your husband. The fact you had just makes it all the worse.

We are registered with them but STILL get unsolicited calls. I just say no and hang up, but my husband has now started being very rude to themStephen wrote:

Tell them you are registered with TPS. Ask them who provided your number and what their number is. The call soon ends.

As I said before - only if they originate in the UK. The other way of getting around TPS is to say you are doing a survey/market research as these are not within the remit of TPSoldbluefox wrote:Tell them you are registered with TPS. In that case, if they are selling tell them you're on benefit and you'll speak to the landlord!!!!
(Works well with double glazing nuisance calls).
Or just quietly put the phone down and walk away. Tactics such as this are the only way to deal with unsolicited calls. Play them at their own game.

Yeah, as if these cretins take any notice of that.
Take their name, company phone number, tell them they've made an illegal phone call because you're registered with TPS and they've just rendered themselves liable to a £500,000 fine.
