Fire!!!
Not so long ago, I had some work done on the kitchen extension roof, they had bitumen and a big blow torch up on the roof,: sealing it...and some how the inside of the the wall caught fire.
Roofer dialled 999
Two fire engines...6 dishy fire fighters..heat seaking machine...( as there was smoke but no sign of flames) then hosepipes.
Scary at the time, I was home alone, Alex was away. But everything turned out fine.
Sooooo on Saturday night just gone...I was locking up about 11pm...when I smelt a very strong smell of burnt toast???
I hadn't used my toaster, but the smell was very strong.
I went out the back and the smell got even stronger. My neighbours house was in darkness, but the smell seemed to be coming from that direction.
I ran through my house to check their cars were they, but they weren't.
I then dialled 999..... At the same time banging on my neighbours door...
My neighbour eventually came to the door...(cars were parked in side street) and he could smell it too!!
We went through to his back....it was even stronger there.
We then heard the sirens...( live quite close to fire station)...
Two fire engines...sirens, lights ..etc....by this time the whole street was up.
The fire fighters smelt the smell....banged on neighbours either side of me and my neighbours.
The neighbour on my side was ok...
The smell was coming from the house two doors up from me..but they couldn't get an answer...
They got a machine off the fire truck to force open the door, when a VERY drunk lady answered her door.
She had put a pizza into her microwave....instead of oven..for 15 mins...and it caught fire.
She was so drunk..the smell didn't wake her...and she didn't have smoke alarms!!!!
Fire fighter told me she was a very lucky lady, as my keen sense of smell and quick reaction to dial 999, had probably stopped a house fire and maybe as she was so out of it, saved her life.
She lives alone, but a member of her family came and took her away with them on Saturday night after the fire engines went, with not a word to anyone in the street.
Not seen her since.

The lengths some will go to, to get the 'hunky firemen' back
Seriously .. well done Sue it could have had an entirely different outcome if you hadn't been on the ball.

Re: Fire!!!
Yes meg..it's a terrace.
I must admit, I felt a bit daft when I phoned 999 to say I could smell burnt toast...
But the lady on the phone was great.
Hunky indeed..... Jo...
I'm waiting for them to come back to check my smoke alarms....( even though they installed new ones for me when I had my little fire
)
Stephen...burnt toast flavour...
Thanks Gill.

Re: Fire!!!
Well thank goodness it turned out ok(ish), and nobody was hurt etc.
Well done you - great neighbours can be few and far between sometimes, and you most certainly did the right things.

Well done Sue.
Things could have been very scary. Others could have been in bed or away from home and the smell gone unnoticed until it was too late.
I do hope the lady realises how lucky she is, thanks to your quick thinking.

Re: Fire!!!
Well done Sue, what a good neighbour you are.
A similar story but no drunk people and fortunately no need for the fire brigade, but goes to show how fires start. A young lad
who worked for us would bring micro pizzas to work. He was I have to say a bit dopey sometimes!! I was sitting at my desk
when billowing smoke and the most awful smell came from the kitchen. Instead of cooking the pizza for 3mins or whatever the
time was, he had stuck it in for 30mins. The microwave was a right off but nothing worse than that.
Just goes to show how a small mistake can lead to disaster and the lady in question should thank her lucky stars Sue has
such a sensitive sense of smell.
