Scotland stays

Salmond goes (hopefully)

The BBC shuts up about it (no chance  )

Life gets back to normal (one day) :)

Actually very surprised at how many voted YES so I don't think the subject will go away for long.

There can't be allot else going on in the world at the moment, all you can get on the main news channels this morning is continuous waffle about the bl**dy jock vote.

Did I lose any sleep worrying which way it would go.......did I hell. The only thing that kept me awake last night was the thunder storm.

Possibly not Maureen, but it will probably be another 15/20 years until the SNP can muster another campaign, by which time north sea oil will all be gone and the economic case for independence will be even weaker.
I think the Union is safe until the English want rid of the rest.

Hope the point hasn't been missed..the slogan of the No campaign was ' better together'. Too much sniping & negativity in the campaign. The West Lothian question ' will need to be addressed but we don't need greater entrenchment.

If you know your Scots history, you'd know I was meaning we may not have seen the last of Salmond.

Robert the Bruce and the spider

The legend of Bruce and spider is world famous.

It is said that in the early days of Bruce’s reign he was defeated by the English and driven into exile. He was on the run - a hunted man. He sought refuge in a small dark cave and sat and watched a little spider trying to make a web.

Time and time again the spider would fall and then climb slowly back up to try again.

If at first you don't succeed - try, try again.

Finally, as the Bruce looked on, the spider managed to stick a strand of silk to the cave wall and began to weave a web. Robert the Bruce was inspired by the spider and went on to defeat the English at the Battle of Bannockburn.

Mind you, the legend as it is now told was first published by Sir Walter Scott in ‘Tales of a Grandfather’ in 1828, more than 500 years after the Battle of Bannockburn. It is thought that Scott may have adapted a story told about Sir James Douglas

The Scots may have said no to independence but it now seems eveyone in the UK is to get devolution. Am I the only one who does not want another layer of politicians feeding their snouts in the trough, they certainly do not add any value to the economy, so why do we need any more?

Abolish The Lords and hold an English parliament using their facilities. Simples :)

Not a bad idea but maybe we should switch the commons to an English parliament abolish the Lords and replace it with a Senate dealing with the UK only.

What has amused me most were the comments made by a scots friend of mine, who is now domiciled in the USA.

e.g. this one (made before the result was announced)

"I can't believe the amount of (generally poor) coverage it's received in this country. Quite amazing to think the US has actually woken up long enough to realize that there's something interesting going on in another country that does directly affect its own interests. A couple of folks have asked me if I think the US will invade if it's a yes majority vote and the north sea oil is under threat. Got to admit there is a precedent there! :-) "

I would love to know what percentage of the 'yes' votes were by those in the 16/18 age bracket, as I see it most of them would only have an idealistic view of their future, they would have absolutely no idea whatsoever of the true likely consequences not only for Scotland but also the rest of the UK.

Lollie, 71% under 18s voted Yes, 73% over 65s voted No.

NSAM, the best USA news item I heard was on CNN wheee the reporter interviewed voters in 'Kircuddly'. Priceless!

The backlash is fascinating now that the West Lothian issue has come to the fore in the light of further devolution to Scotland. In fairness if so many powers are being devolved to Scotland the same should apply to Wales and Northern Ireland, and even to England. I see no reason why only English MPs should vote on English matters but it appears would put Milliband in a tizzy.

It appears to me that democracy works but only when it is suiting particular political parties.

Maybe the Scots have done us all a big favour because, without this referendum politicians of all persuasions would have continued fobbing us all off.

How can you suggest such a thing Smurfy but yes that's exactly why Ed is so frightened of the West Lothian question and why David is so keen to push it through.

Although I have no affiliation with the Tory party (I don't trust any of them) I thought it was what we call democracy, but clearly not when it is detrimental to a political party.

I am off to the Houses of Parliament in early October, and quite looking forward to it. I should not be, but somehow am, always surprised at the infighting which goes on in all political parties. The Tories on the back benches will again ruin their party's image by plotting to put unrealistic leaders from the right in place. Even the Nationalists are not totally unified. I like some MPs in all the main parties, and they are usually the moderates.

We are not unreasonable though to expect that if Scots want more devolution, their MPs should not vote on English policy. They are already a tail wagging the dog, which is distorting true democracy.

Ho hum....too old to get excited about any of it. I just want a guard of honour when I arrive in my homeland on Monday.

I don't remember a by-election Frank, but congratulations anyway! Which constituency do you represent?
