Visit to Houses of Parliament

Unread post by Frank Manning »

I had a visit last Monday, with our Rotary Club. We were met by our MP who had arranged it for us, and I really enjoyed it so much that I would willingly go again anytime. I found the history of Westminster Hall, amazing. The House of Commons was smaller than I had expected, but just to stand by the despatch box, and think of all those great politicians of the past standing there and announcing great events in our history; Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Clem Atlee etc. Seeing the mark on the door of the house where Black Rod knocks to summon them to the Lords.

I went many years ago (I was still at school at the time!) and all I can remember was the constant bickering. It was at the time when North Sea gas had been discovered and there were some who insited on knowing how much gas there was and how long it would last

Fortunately the house wasn't sitting Monday afternoon so both chambers were empty, and we had plenty of time with the guide explaining to us the meaning of everything and several features. I will go again if I can.

Television always makes a venue appear larger than it is. I remember the tattoo arena in Edinburgh and the Kensington Oval in Barbados being a lot smaller than the impression i got from seeing them on tv.

I took some French students there one evening many years ago. I was surprised at how polite both sides of the House were to each other. Several bills were being discussed. The students couldn't work out who was going to pay for them....

We did a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament last summer when the MP's were on holiday.

It was very interesting, although some of the commentary was quite basic, as some of the participants of the tours may not be British, and have to have a lot of history explained to them.
