HMV staff using twitter

Unread post by Kendhni »

I thought this story was interesting. Staff have been getting vocal via the HMV twitter site ... I think they need to be very very careful what they say, because until they get the redundancy package in their hand they can still be fired.

This happened in the company a friend of mine worked for. He had to tell a lot of people that they had been made redundant ... but at the time he was not able to tell those people he was also on the list. He said he could deal with most things, including getting a black eye, but the one thing he struggled with was dealing with men who burst into tears or begged not to be on the list.

One person however took it on themselves to email many of the companies customers and tell them what he thought of the company ... the email worked its way back up to head office and then back down to the local office. My friend had to call the person in and tell them that they had been fired ... their attitude was that they had been made redundant anyway, so no big deal ... sadly when it was explained to them that they had just lost their entire redundancy package the difference sunk in.

The main reason that HMV failed is that they did not adapt to technology changes. They do not have a significant online presence in the way that Amazon do, they should have had facilities to download MP3s in store.

You cannot blame any Government for the progress of technology nor can you blame them for companies not adapting.

Good grief Paul, it has nothing to do with the government  .. it is to do with modern technology being able to deliver products that effectively cuts out the high street middle man .. it is to do with a company that for some reason has not been able to adapt well enough or sell its brand in what is an online world.

Yes - and I still cannot see what it has to do with the Government

Paul, the story makes no reference to anything governmental. This is purely a trading issue of a private company that has been in decline now for many years ... they basically find that they no longer have the resources to trade. it is sad that yet another High Street name is on the demise but I think that this recession is nothing more than the straw that broke the camels back. They trade in what is still a reasonably buoyant product market ... but their customer base is obviously buying elsewhere.

Once again my apologies.

"HMV Staff will soon be the next bunch on welfare to be classed as work shy scroungers by this Government."

That's the one that threw me, I assumed the author of that Twitter was referring to Osbourne's take that if someone passes a house on their way to work and the curtains are closed, then the inhabitants of that house must be living the 'life of Riley' on benefits......but then again I heard him say that on the BBC, so he probably never said it......Some people are so gullible, ain't I :D

I thought the OP was about people being careful in what they say in case they are sacked before collecting their redundancy money...not why HMV went into administration, reasons that even a plebe like me fully understands.

I just wanted to point out that it would be very unfair to sack someone for telling the truth, therefore could find nothing wrong any of those Twitters.
