Oh yes ... him and a number of other leading names of the period, bar Chris Barber, played at our local Trad Jazz Club, happy memories.

Acker, so I believe, came about cos it's Zummerzet for ' Mate '

R.I.P ' Mate '
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

The only piece of music I can associate with him is that well known and wonderful 'Stranger on the Shore' - and I enjoyed playing it and my own variations of it for a long time.

How talented to produce/play a piece of music like that - perfectly rounded, gentle, lingering and romantic; and I am so grateful for the music and the happy memories.

Saturday Nights at the local dance venue.

Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Chris Barber who went on to become household names.

Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Lane were also doing the circuit.

Acker Bilk would always start the night with a game of darts in the pub across the road.

Wonderful memories.

Stranger on the shore is very nostalgic for me, because I was home on leave from the Merchant Navy when it was being played everywhere and seemingly all the time, that autumn of 1961, just before I met Sue for the first time. I always associate it with a very happy period in my life.
