Pressie for Baby
Hi all you grandparents out there! Can any of you help me?
I have a lovely little granddaughter who was born in April this year. Her dad is my son, who has lived with his dad for about the last 20 years after we split up (long story and irrelevant to this plea for help). I've not seen a great deal of my son over the years, but we are building bridges now that he's grown up and settled, and I am determined that this little one will grow up to know who I am and that I will be a proper granny, nanny whatever to her.
My dilemma is that I have no idea what to get her for Christmas. I have asked her dad if there is anything that he and her mum would like her to have, but he says that they and other grandparents have got it all.
I have no idea where to go from here; I don't particularly want to give cash.
Has anyone got a good idea for something nice?

Fisher Price have some lovely toys - fun to play with and educational too; then if she is getting mobile then what about a little (very traditional) push-truck with coloured wooden blocks?
Lego have a range of things suitable for little ones - and they have a 'read and build range' which is suitable for about 18months and upwards, and good old Playmobil have a nice chunky range for little hands to grasp. Early Learning Centre have a great range of little chunky characters which are bright and colourful, easy to hold etc., and educational.
Don't be afraid of 'buying ahead' - she's going to grow and develop, so by buying ahead, your gift could be highly acceptable, useful and enjoyable.
Good luck.

Re: Pressie for Baby
In the circumstances that you describe I would suggest a quality cuddly toy, something a little unusual from the norm ideally.... but soft and warm, just like Nanna Ginny.
If you get it right your little grand-daughter will carry you everywhere

Thank you all.
I think that I am going to go with a lovely cuddly, squishy soft toy...........and a gorgeous outfit.........and add to the savings account I opened when she was born.

How about something like a Steiff teddy bear which can be something which will appreciate in value or become a family heirloom in time? All children love a cuddly toy but this would be something just that little different with its potential as an investment.
Just an idea..............
Just an idea..............

Re: Pressie for Baby
OBF good idea, I bought one for our first grandchild - a girl. When our grandson came along I didn't want to get another bear so I bought a proper Paddington, complete with wellies. John gave me one before we were married (36 years now!) and when our girls were growing up they both wore the wellies when they were the right size - bright yellow ones. Now the Paddington film is out - which I intend to see - maybe a Paddington is another idea. It's very difficult buying for grandchildren - ours live next door and even though we see a lot of them it's still difficult so this year I've bought what our daughter told me they'd like!
For the first time we are taking our grandaughter, age 5, to see Sleeping Beauty which is on at the Theatre Royal Winchester - really looking forward to it. One interesting thing, I was talking to her about it the other day when I suddenly realised she is so used to seeing characters - like the Disney "Frozen", she hadn't realised that there would be real people in it! She said, "What a real lady as the Sleeping Beauty?" She was amazed. A sign of the times and that we need to start taking her to the theatre.

As she is so young, she won't actually understand that you have bought her things this year. As others have said: "Think of the future". How about starting a library for her with traditional childrens' classics, nursery rhymes, poems etc. Despite the current electronic age and the use of Kindles etc. our grandchildren still love to be read to from traditional books.
