The quality of the toast, it's the little things that matter

Unread post by Ray Scully »

Do others find the quality of toast at breakfast to be very variable, whether it be in the MDR, at the Buffet or Room Service. Is it the bread or the inconsistent performance of the toasters, both machines and operatives?

Yet to come across a decent toaster on a ship or in a hotel. You normally have to send it round at least twice to get a decent colour to it. But that is a personal thing. We all like our toast cooked to varying shades, I personally like mine dark brown.

Both myself and Lady Macbeth never have trouble with our toast. If its not right we just tell James the Butler to go and get it right. O I forgot to say that as he is both a new butler and he is English, so we expect him to get it wrong most of the time.

Sadly we had to retire MacDuff as he could no longer manage the stairs up to our bedroom in the south turret.

What I find worrying is that if they can't get the toast right how can I have confidence in those driving the boat?

On P&O the toast is generally OK in the buffet if it is a fairly fresh batch, otherwise it can become dry or cold. In Celebrity's buffet there is a toast station where you order your toast and request any deviations from their normal variety.
It always amuses me that some prople collect all their breakfast courses at the same time, and then seem surprised when their toast and marmalade is both dry and cold!

I didn't think that the provision of the toast station made up for the other deficiencies I encountered on Celebrity.

Gosh that's interesting ... I had no idea that the Captain's duties included making toast.

Thanks Ray

Hi Ray,

After orange and grapefruit segments, wheatabix and a full English breakfast l haven't as yet been able to find room for the toast....however like Stephen l like mine well done.... with proper salted butter.

Btw...l had two slices of toast this morning, the only problem being was that the bread was to big for the toaster which resulted in me having to send my wife back to the kitchen to cut the ends off

Regards

A little gripe is that when we have breakfast in the MDR, the waiters put the toast on the table before you have even had time to eat the fruit segments or the cereal. Therefore, it is cold by the time you get round to it.

Personally I think the toast should be cooked over an open fire on board by the steward, while you sit at your table keeping a close eye on the colour change on the table monitor. ;)

I dislike the bread that P and O use for toast - I'm guessing it is bulk bought and frozen but it definitely lacks something!

If you ask for thick toast then it is better and fresher.

It was you who set fire to the toast conveyor in the hotel when we were about to board Azura in May Stephen.

On second thoughts it wasn't you it was an idiot who tried to send a large croissant through despite a large sign advising you not to do this. A bit like the signs on a low bridge but lorry drivers and double deck bus drivers seem to ignore those too.

As a coeliac I always take breakfast in the MDR and my gluten free toast is always satisfactory, Cheryl doesn't appreciate me dragging her out of bed early to take breakfast before nine though she's not a morning person.

That is just how I like it - nice and cold. Can't abide warm, muchless hot toast.

I'm taking my own toaster and extension lead next time. 50p a slice if anyone else want to use it. You get your own bread.

With you on that, Gill. As long as it's crisp.

I know of a hotel where they put out the breakfast toast the evening before.
