How long is your hedge?

I've just finished cutting our hedge, a job which seems to get harder everytime l do it. With a length of eighty metres by a metre wide you will understand why l have left the cleaning up for my wife.

So how long is your hedge and do you cut it yourself or do as l will be doing next time and get the wife to do it?

We don't have a hedge but the neighbour does and he is letting it grow so high and bushy that we cannot see as we drive the car out of our driveway onto the pavement. We asked him once if he would trim the corner back a bit by our drive but it has fallen on deaf ears. We don't want it to cause an argument but it is so inconsiderate of him.

We have considered that option, Stephen, but we have a huge street light on the pavement the other side of the drive and being on a main road we would easily be seen, even at midnight. Maureen.

Report them to the council - theres rules about blocking your view of the highway - cant remember what its called. If you like them - pretend the council were doing their rounds and mentioned it to you - hopefully the clippers will come out!

Hi Maureen...its never easy when you have inconsiderate neighbours something we have been lucky to avoid thus far. We do have a bounder hedge to both back and front of our property but l always keep the front hedge at a hight that dosn't obscure view of the highway for both us and our neighbours...l actually think there should be a law in place that prevents neighbours from cluttering up their front gardens to the extent that it becomes an eyesore or indeed makes it hazardous to get off your drive. You have my sympathy Maureen as l would find such a situation intolerable.

In such a situation as yours l think l would bung the local tinkers a tenner and get them to give it a short back and sides..

Hat's off to you Keith I know what hard work it is cutting privet hedges. I inherited my Mum's house last year and there are hedges on 3 sides, I've just worked out that they come to 86 metres in length, most are about 3 or 4 foot high apart from one part that is 6 foot high and about 27 foot long. I cut them all myself last summer but this year I've paid a local gardener to come in and do them for me. It costs £70 each time but as far as I'm concerned its money well spent.

Hi Tinker and Keefy - I know we are being rather pathetic about the hedge but we are hoping to solve the problem without it turning into an argument because, other than the hedge, they are extremely nice neighbours. The wife is lovely but he is quite stubborn, especially about his garden.

It is worth bearing Tinker's idea in mind though.

We have 3 hedges. I can manage the front hedge and the side hedge of our drive and the one that divides the upper and lower lawn/garden, with my new toy, a Bosch cordless hedge cutter, so I don't have to get the heavy electric one out any more, ( or risk cutting through the cable as I have done so many times in the past),TG, but we do have someone come in to do the boundary hedge as it is huge, high and wide, BUT as we have no neighbours on those boundaries, height is not a problem.

My husband has a Bosch cordless trimmer too and he seems ALWAYS seems to be trimming the hedge between us and next door, which is about 6' thick and earlier this year was at least 8' high! The back boundary hedge is "protected" and we are not allowed to cut or trim it! The farmer comes once a year in November or December and does it with an attachment on his tractor. We do sneakily cut back some of the "sprouting" so that we still have some of the wonderful views, as it can easily grow 2-3' from the usual post cut 6'.

Fortunately in the front garden we have fences both sides and along one side in the back, although that is FULL of heavy plant growth and needs careful annual pruning - but that's my job!

Don't, whatever you do! Once an official complaint has gone into the council, when you come to sell your house it will have to be declared to a purchaser on the Property Information Form.

You're probably in the clear if you do it anonymously, but it's pretty obvious where the complaint has come from.

On one side we have a hedge which is a shrub called Escallonia. It's popular here as it's one of the plants which thrive by the sea, but it never seems to stop growing and has to be constantly cut. My husband also bought a cordless trimmer which has made life a bit easier.
