Sexism on TV

Unread post by Mervyn and Trish »

I've just read that Miriam O'Reilly is still banging on about sexism and/or ageism at the BBC, all going back to when she was dropped from Countryfile when it went from the sidelines to primetime BBC1.

Now I happen to think there are some very good older people on the BBC, of both sexes, and they're not all glamour pusses. In fact some are quite plain, to put it politely, but they enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Why can't Miriam grasp that she wasn't dumped because she was getting older, or because she was a woman, but quite simply because she wasn't good enough?

Perhaps she'll grasp it when they dump John Craven?

Well I watch Countryfile every now and again and I'd never heard of her so she made a lasting impression on me. I have just had to look her up and I'm still none the wiser.
Aren't all of these 'isms' just getting a bit out of order?
I was taught to be cautious

Well it only took the BBC 25 years to find out she was not good enough.

"Miriam O'Reilly worked as a journalist and presenter for the BBC for over 25 years in television and radio. After she and three other middle-aged women were dropped from BBC1's Countryfile programme, Miriam challenged the Corporation at an employment tribunal, and won a landmark ageism case. The director general has admitted Miriam's case was a 'turning point' for older women on TV"

I think Britain has gone equality mad in recent years, in my opinion the best person for the job should get the job regardless of sex, age or ethnic origin.
The Labour party are under the spotlight because it was suggested that the new leader did not have enough female members in its restructure, well if all the best candidates for a party that could possibly run our country were women I would have no argument.

During my employment with local government there was a period where we were understaffed in our department making life very difficult for me and my colleagues, there was a person that applied for one of the positions that had all the right credentials for the job but was turned down. Weeks went by and still no recruitment so I asked my departmental head why the person who was suitable for the position was turned down, I was amazed when he replied that we didn't have enough of a percentage of people from other ethnic communities.
Now I am not sexist, racist and being retired definitely not ageist but if you have a person that has all the qualifications for the job despite their age, sex or ethnic origin they should get the job.

I think the person I am referring to was racially discriminated as an English person in their own country.

I worked for ladies at University, and they were a pleasure to work for compared to many of the autocratic, misogynistic, politicking, devious men in management. These PhD females were not ageist among themselves or towards me who was fast approaching 70. By comparison, I saw an excellent young female in one engineering company discriminated against because she was too young. I recommended her for a promotion and the words used were; "Hey no!" She's young, she's pretty, she'll get married, have babies and we will have wasted our time". I despaired; Zero motivational skills on display.

I said practically the same thing last night Ray to the good lady when I heard all this tosh on the news about not enough women being in the labour Party.

I worked for the BBC for 20 years, but willingly confess I wouldn't be good enough to front a primetime BBC 1 programme!

Stephen I'm sick of the politicians in this country no matter what party is in power because they all make promises to tackle the problems we face then they don't have the balls to carry them out for fear of upsetting the twits in Europe.

The media are just as bad - going on at Jeremy Corbyn about the gender balance of his shadow cabinet - when surely there were much more pertintinent questions to be asked.
I for one wouldn't care if his cabinet was all male, or all female: - provided they were the best people for the job.

'Positive' discrimination is still discrimination, and should be recognised as such.

so true... positive discrimination towards some is negative discrimination against others.

Agreed. We're getting to the point where no-one is discriminated against more than white, middle class, able bodied, heterosexual men!

I know it's not politically correct, but I've never fancied men. Call me old fashioned or weird, but it's just how I am.

Cakes on the other hand. Can't get enough. And chocolate. And wine. And cheese. And Malt Whisky.

Apart from that I'm entirely normal.
