Are we ripped off in the UK - absolutely.

Microsoft software US price $x UK price £x i.e. same numbe, different currency symbol.

I wanted a technology item - UK price 350 pounds - US price 200 dollars - ie. less than half the UK price taking into account exchange rates

Are we ripped off in the UK? You bet your “Yankee Dollar” we are!!

Even your beloved Carnival Corporation are at it. Just take a look at the following example extracted from Carnival UK site and Carnival USA site for the same cruise:

10 day cruise on-board Carnival Vista, sailing from Barcelona on the 14th may 2016. Priced for a Balcony Cabin.

UK price per person = £1,088 Total for 2 in cabin = £2,176
USA price per person = £ 981 Total for 2 in cabin = £1,962

A rip off Brittan totalling £214

How’s that for equality??

Just need to look at the T&Cs of the American lines, deposit refundable up to final balance date, price match any reductions.
P&O's Caribbean fly cruises used to include complimentary drinks, they now charge a £100 supplement from regional airports.

Even fluid pricing is a rip off. Take this as an example:
Oriana X612 for August 2016, May 2015 price £2199. Same cruise September price £2699 or £1000 extra per cabin.
I'll wait..................

Most UK PAYE taxpayers are supporting through income support the low wages paid by many multinationals operating in the UK.

I do a bit of turning as a hobby, I turn pens out of wood or acrylic and buy the mechanical parts from Australia because they are half the price I can get them for in the U.K. plus postage is free.

The daft thing about it is they are usually made in China or the Far East so they travel down under and back up to the U.K. not very green I know but I am a poor pensioner. :moresarcasm:

Well I wonder how the new consumer protection laws announced today will effect the situation. The ability to promote class actions could be a bit of a challenge for our lawyers and an interesting diversion from ambulance chasing.

No money is paid to the employers.

Not directly perhaps - but certainly indirectly, by income support being used to make up the shortfall in the wages paid by some of these companies.

I thought the Chancellor was introducing a new higher minimum wage, so which employers are not going to honour the new wage?

That's not the employers' fault. If the job cannot sustain a higher wage then there would be no employment. Alternatively they could employ more people at a lower wage. If the employees weren't receiving the public money then the employer cannot necessarily make up the difference. There's no escaping the fact that sometimes the work done does not support a higher hourly cost.

The whole system of tax credits is crazy, in my opinion.

Just about as crazy as an organisation charging £2.50 for a 'paper' cup of coffee and only being able to pay around £6.70 an hour to its staff.

I think it's April 2016 that the living wage is compulsory at the moment it's voluntary.

I thought I read somewhere that Starbucks, or maybe it was Costa, was going to pay all its staff the new minimum wage, regardless of age.
Ray, If I were you I would stop listening to the Corbynista's, according to them everything is wrong in this country, and any new Govt. announcement is a U turn brought about by their and the trade unions actions.

Not at all John, this is a wonderful country that could be even better if our society was a little fairer, and the actions of the multi nationals and some of our home spun organisations were reigned in.
I am very fortunate to having lived through a golden age were through very little effort on my behalf, I have an extremely generous pension, and property whose value would have represented a kings ransom. It would be very easy to adopt the attitude of 'I'm on the bus ring the bell' but it is not how I was brought up.

when I see people complaining they are being ripped off for things like cruises and computers etc, I wonder how selfish and needy they really are
none of the rip off items including a Costa coffe or a cruise or a lap top or a telly etc are needed, they are luxuries and by the very definition of luxury goods are over priced.
Nobody can complain about the price of luxury goods as they are not needed but wanted
so anyone complaining is nothing more than a victim of their own greed and selfishness and gullible enough to believe the sales pitch from the media
in truly poor countries people would be concerned about food, shelter , heat and light and if they were going to survive the week.
silly first world problems of how much a new lap top is or how much are balcomy cabins, is rather pathetic and self absorbed really

Couldn't agree more Dark Knight

I consider myself fortunate to be able to enjoy a few of the finer things in life. (including cruise holidays)

As of yet, no one has ever put a gun to my head and forced me to pay a 'rip off' price

Pretty much everything that I purchase, I do so with my eyes open.

I could probalby save a couple of bob here and there if I put the effort in, as some folk do, but that doesn't rate highly on my list of priorities.

My motto is enjoy what you've got (health & wealth) and give back what you can (time & money)

I quite agree. You can't be ripped off over something you don't have to buy.

they are the easiest to rip off , as they tend to be the most aspirational and self absorbed, doth the cap fit? then wear it.

Below are a number of definitions of the term rip off
I fail to see how 'ripping off' people can be justified in ANY circumstances

Ray

an act or instance of ripping off another or others; a theft, cheat, or swindle.
exploitation, especially of those who cannot prevent or counter it.
a copy or imitation.
a person who rips off another or others; thief or swindler.

if you are gullible enough to think your life has less meaning for not having the latest gadget, or that cruise or any other luxury item, that you can well live without and you pay for it, you cannot with any honesty say you were being ripped off, for the simple fact that if you felt you were being ripped off, you would not buy it unless of course you are an idiot Ray?

however if you are really that stupid, then you deserve to be ripped off, you are not forced to buy anything more than you need to survive, it is your choice and yours alone, so don't try to tell people they are being ripped off, they are not
