Sophie update

Unread post by GillD46 »

What a wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL day! After 82 days in UCH NICU our dear little (not so little these days) Sophie has gone home to live with her mummy and daddy! She has grown from 2lbs 6ozs to 6lbs 10ozs, and is nearly at her due date.

Thank you all so much for all your wonderful support and good wishes throughout.

Thanks everyone. We won't actually be spending Christmas with them - they need time to settle in as a new family and Sophie needs to be kept very quiet for some weeks following her discharge, so they are having a very low key Christmas this year - but we are going up to see them the weekend before.

We do have an invitation for next year though :P

So pleased to hear this news Gill. Even though you won't be spending Christmas with her, at least you will be happy in the knowledge that she is now, at last, at home where she belongs and is getting stronger and stronger. You will soon be taking her out to show her off to friends and relations.

Great news Gill, I'm so pleased. I will tell friends about Sophie's discharge as their daughter had a little girl, also called Sophie, who was born just over 10 weeks premature in November - she was just 2lbs. So I'm sure you will be familiar with what they and her daughter and husband are going through now. So pleased you will be able to enjoy Christmas, even though not with Sophie. We will be spending Christmas with both our daughters, and now three Grandchildren, including Willow who is now 11 weeks old, doing well, just not too keen on sleeping during the day! I asked my son-in-law if anything had prepared him for the first few weeks of the new baby - he said that nothing anyone has said, or anything he had read could possibly prepare you for the presence of this little new daughter who has taken over their lives. Mind you, he's fantastic with Willow, loves all children, a natural father, wonderful to see.

Carole, enjoy Christmas with your family and especially little Willow. So glad she's doing well.

Please do tell your friends I can comletely understand the anxiety they must all be suffering just now, but there IS light at the end of the tunnel. Our Sophie has done REALLY well, and is now feeding almost exclusively, just the occasional top up by tube when she gets too tired to suck at night. The tube should be out in a few days. She has gained weight, her eyes and hearing are fine and she is now just like a newborn. I wish them and their Sophie well and would be interested in hearing how she progresses.

What a wonderful Christmas present. Great news. I suppose you don't have wise men and shepherd queuing outside with gifts?

I can't believe that just a few hours after I wrote about our friends little Grandaughter who was born prematurely in November weighing 2lbs, died yesterday afternoon. Both parents and grandparents are obviously shattered and shocked by this. It was the couple's first child. A similar thing happened to my elder daughter, although her pregnancy had to be terminated at about 20 weeks as the baby she was expecting had a syndrome which meant that he wouldn't survive beyond a few hours after birth. Kate still had to go through the process of labour to deliver him. So I know a little of what they are going through. I know these happenings are horrific whenever they occur but it seems to be worse just before Christmas - I know it shouldn't but it does. So sad.

Oh Carole, I am so very, very sorry to hear this devastating news. What can I say? Please send my condolences if you think it appropriate. And I am so sorry for you too, even as a friend it is the most awful thing to be near, especially when you have been through a similar experience yourself. And you are right, at this time if year it is even more painful - if possible.

Very, very sad news.
