Price rises
My window cleaner came this week. We live in a 3 storey town house so he uses his own water and brushes on poles.
He sadly informed me that due to having to pay his men the living wage and the new pension insisted upon by the government that he has had to increase his prices from £14 per month to £20 a month. He said with a sigh that he knows he will loose business but has no option.
As someone who worked in human resources for many a year I know its good to pay well and have a pension but it all comes at a cost to the consumer.

Hmmm..... my window cleaner has been coming for years and he has only ever charged £6, again using his own deionised water and brushes on poles. I said to him a few months ago that it's about time he put his prices up. If I send him over to you and he adds petrol and bridge tolls, you may still be paying less than you are now giving to your guy.

That's quite an increase almost 50% ( almost as bad as P&O tips

Re: Price rises
The best window cleaner story happened several years ago. Our window cleaner, at the time, came one day and said that the price had gone up by some ££ (cannot remember the exact amount). Upon asking why such an increase "I have taken on more work and I now fall in the VAT bracket so you have to pay VAT"!!

I clean our windows, partly because I begrudge paying someone else, and from past experience they never cleaned them to my standard. You can't beat a real chamois finish.

Re: Price rises
My next door neighbour sacked his window cleaner. He said the cleaner thought all his windows were round as they were the only bits he cleaned.
I'm a Karcher man myself. Wonderful bit of kit.

Keep it clean, Maureen. I've heard about the Welsh and their sheep although a chamois would be different!!!Whynd1 wrote:Well I would if I could. But a 3 storey town house. Tell you what I will buy a trampoline and bounce up and down with my chamois !!!

Re: Price rises
As Stephen says you can't beat a good chamois and not many window cleaners use chamois and scrim these days.
I have a front porch a garage on the left elevation and a full length conservatory to the rear so only one upstairs window is accesible with a ladder, but most modern double/triple glazed windows can be cleaned from the inside if you open them fully.
I use Stardrops for a bright shiny finish, the last bottle I bought was from Wilko's.

That's just slave labour Merv!Mervyn and Trish wrote:The only reason we hare a window cleaner is because we have upstairs windows. He only does the front and side because he comes often when we're our and the garden is secure and there are no upstairs windows at the back. We pay £5 which seems a bargain for two men for 15 to 20 mins
And, please, can you really not post on any thread without bringing up the subject of bunnies ?!

Stardrops and a Karcher. What a great combination. I cleaned all my windows yesterday - upstairs, downstairs and conservatory..................... then it rained last night!!!Raybosailor wrote:I use Stardrops for a bright shiny finish, the last bottle I bought was from Wilko's.

Our window cleaner cleans the frames as well as the glass, brill .... until the sun shines that is but what can you expect for twelve quid I ask myself. Haven't got the heart to sack him, a lovely wee feller who supports the Foxes.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Re: Price rises
Never quite understood the economics of it but our window cleaner comes from Birmingham (over 45 miles away). He does all the outsides, the frames and the conservatory (but not the roof) for £15. He must do a lot in the area in a day to make it worth the journey.

Re: Price rises
Too many of us are enjoying cheap prices on the backs of the low paid. The BBC programs last week on low paid jobs was quite illuminating.

Re: Price rises
While I agree with you, Ray, what about the higher prices that we pay for goods that are far cheaper to buy in other countries. For example, I paid £10 less in France for a box of Epson ink cartridges compared to the Tesco price. The cost of shipping to France will be insignificantly different to the shipping cost to the UK, yet the French retailer is still making a decent profit.
Further, we've suffered from trades unions in the past demanding, and getting, higher wages for their workers, which have forced prices to rise to cover the higher salary costs, which then, in turn, leads to more wage demands and so it goes on.
So, yes, let's shun goods where we know the workers are underpaid and yes, press for a decent wage, but at the same time, we should protest at artificially high prices.
