Organ donation

Unread post by Mervyn and Trish »

Interesting debate on the radio today about the merits or not of an opt out system for organ donation.

A number of people saying they were unwilling to donate organs.

So how about a simple "if you're not willing to donate you're not eligible to receive"?

Very cruel Merv, but maybe has some merit.
However I think the proposed system sounds to be a good way, this would still allow families not to allow organ donation when they have reservations, but should lead to a far higher number of available donor organs.

No problems here, in fact I would make it no negotiable - everyone is in.

Perhaps we need a referendum on this - sorry wrong topic

I carry a donor card so I don't see what the problem is. Any bits of me which may help somebody else after my day they are welcome to. After all they'll be no good to me!! I have seen too many crying out for organ transplants for me to think any differently. What can be the objections?
Not so sure about leaving my body to research though. (They might laugh!!)

I would have thought that your body would, by now, be "pickled"

I agree with towny that families should still have the right to refuse particularly in the case of a death of a young person for example following a tragic accident. Thirty years ago my 38 year old brother was killed in a road accident. We didn't know his opinion on the subject and we couldn't even think straight at the time never mind make such a decision like that.

I still can't make up my mind on the subject but I have every admiration for those that do make that difficult choice.

Maureen.

I prefer to call it preserved.

Interestingly this topic was debated by 17 and 18 year olds who were applying for their driving licences.
Many said they would donate and had discussed it with their families.
Here in Wales they operate a different system, automatic donation unless you make your wishes known.

I do wonder if there is / or should be an age cut off point where organ donation are viable for transplant? I also wonder if there is/ should be an age cut off point to receive an organ transplant?

I think some organs age better than others. That said, I believe most organ transplants are from people who died in accidents rather than of old age. I'm happy to leave it to the medics. If my bits can save anyone they're welcome to them. But my hope is to wear everything out before I go!
