The art of uhu - banned?
When I worked on a building site as a student one of the first things I was asked was 'Can you uhu?'
I hadn't a clue and then they explained, when a pretty girl walks by you cup your hands to your mouth and go, 'Uhu'. Nowadays I understand that uhuing and wolf-whistling are banned on building sites as both are considered sexual harrassment.
I must be getting old as I always saw it as a bit of harmless fun but apparently it is not any longer. Another tradition consigned to the locker of history. I never realised it caused offence.

Me too till I read the post. I think we must be the same generation as if I was whistled at etc. I thought it a bit of fun and secretly felt quite flattered. I wouldn't have been offended but society today sadly has changed so much and as you say what we classed as harmless fun is now taken to be harassment.Dark Knight wrote:Thought you were on about Uhu glue? and the art of decoupage![]()

When they asked me I thought it was something to do with glue too. That's just how I saw it- a bit of harmless fun and a bit of flattery for the girls - nothing more and nothing less. Personally I think the world's a poorer place for the lack of harmless fun. How often do you hear men whistling nowadays? Very rarely.
Up here in the north people will often refer to you as 'pet', 'love', 'dear', 'lass/lad' or other terms of endearment. I realise some people don't like it but I would much rather a cheery smile from the shop assistant and a bit of chat than a scowl and your change flung into your hand.
As I always think 'Smiles will be returned'.

When my son lived in Leicester I used to walk my dog in the park behind his house and used to meet a lovely old chap (probably same age as me!) who used to call me "duck" apparently a term of endearment up there and again I wasn't in the least put out - I felt it was so nice to be acknowledged with a cheery greeting and smile - perhaps we should start a thread on what people are called in different parts of the country.

I've lost count of the number of women who have called me "darling". They never meant anything by it, I knew they meant nothing by it and they would have been horrified if they thought I had thought they meant something by it.
IMHO, people are too quick to affect offence where none has been given, and they need to get a life.

I also thought we were talking adhesive!. Yoohoo? It's a long time since I heard anyone call that. Don't mind love, darling, duck but sometimes dear can be used in a patronising manner to which I do object.

ah me - gone are the days of trying to find a cutting retort - usually something along the lines of , "Go and waltz with your pick-axe"
My fave was walking with a friend when we were wolf whistled. We both swung round and the whistler stopped in his tracks when he saw we were both 39 weeks pregnant and on our way home from exploring the maternity unit...

In Leicester it's usually, 'Ayoopmeduck!!'
Around these parts it's, 'Ow's ta deun, marrer?'
