Have just had a letter posted through the door which ' invites ' us to sign up to a neighbourhood online network.

* What's the catch ?

* Is it a good idea ?

Has anyone signed up for one of these schemes in their own area ?

It means that you can disagree with people in your immediate vicinity instead of disagreeing with people miles away.

We had one of these in our village but we declined. I looked up the site and it didn't seem to offer any benefits, just seemed a way of knowing what your neighbours were doing.

Same here, I could only assume that the company running the site would be making money out of it

This happened to a friend of mine and was recommended by one of her friends - who knew nothing about it! Seems they are after info.

I have just been reading a ' review ' of this idea and the 1 star ratings were something like two thirds of the total !!

The scheme is financed by selling your data and indeed others if you agree to let them use your Contacts list. You have to register an email address of course but also, it seems, the first line of your address which if correct probably means that they can send junk mail to the registered address with your agreement.

I seem to have answered my own question but would actually like to hear from anybody who thinks it is a good idea and that I have got the wrong end of the stick.

nah - ignoreit - until your neighbours complain that 'you're the only one who doesn't belong' ... the chances of that? zilch!

We've got a second home in Derbyshire (close to where David's family live) and a couple of years ago I joined Nextdoor.co.uk as a way to find out what was happening in our village. I never had any problems with it, in fact it worked to our advantage that we could keep up with what was happening locally when we weren't there. Then about a year ago someone in the village set up a Facebook site which is far more useful so I now keep up to date on that and no longer use Nextdoor.co.uk . I've not heard any complaints in the village about Nextdoor and I certainly didn't receive any more junk mail than we receive at home in London. Hope that helps. x

I can appreciate that your decision could be very useful but less so perhaps at one's normal place of residence.
