Flybe

Unread post by barney »

Terrible shame.
I expect we’ll now see the closure of a few regional airports as well.
Some totally depended on Flybe traffic.

I can’t see any of the bigger airlines picking up Newquay to Belfast or Exeter to Norwich.

At least Extinction Rebellion will be happy with thousands more out of work .

I wonder how many of those who were parading in Bristol have relatives who work for or supplying the likes of Flybe?
I was taught to be cautious

It's giving us a temporary rest from constant Coronavirus sensationalism.

I would expect someone to pick up the slots and planes for a bargain price, especially if they can cherry pick the slots they want.

Flew with them from Norwich to Malaga on a Embraer aircraft, nice plane about 90 seats I think. But still a sad loss to the regions.

On t' regional telly last night a Cornish comedian, Jethro, says he can fly from Newquay to Great Yarmouth for a show in a matter of hours but to do so by road can take all day … on a good day.

I doubt that John.
If they could, they would already be operating these routes.
We were chatting to a lady just last week who flew Exeter to Norwich every month to see her elderly parents.
Their Heathrow slots are valuable but no other company will take the routes.

It will massively affect Jersey tourism.

Flybe headquarters at Exeter have a brand new Hilton next door.
Without Flybe and Exeter airport , the hotel closes as well.
The knock on will be huge.

I find it interesting that subsidy of trains is considered fine but not of a regional airline, given that most of their flights are domestic.

Railways in the UK operate a franchise system so when a carrier fails the franchise becomes available but if no other franchisee can be found then the govt takes over managing its operation.
Maybe regional air operations could be operated in the same way, this would give regions the guarantee that air routes would be guaranteed and give employees better job security.

On the news this morning an article implied that Southampton was virtually dependent on flyBE (over 90% of flights). Could make it even more difficult for people to get to the port.

Just been listening to Southampton taxi drivers on our local radio programe. One of them reckoned it might be as many as 95% of flights were Flybe. Taxi drivers got a lot of their business from the airport. They were saying it's like a ghost town at the moment. The airport is only about 20 minutes from us and it's been so useful when going to places like France, Majorca, Minorca etc. 100% better than having to go to Gatwick. Such a shame.

Elsewhere I've seen climate worriers celebrating. Maybe they're not either dependent on Flybe's services or employees. And maybe they know where you can catch a train to the Isle of Man!

Have been reading that Logan Air is due to take over many of the UK flights. You can goggle it :)

Barney, I am very pleased that I was right about this, it will still be a major disappointment to any creditors, but at least some of the Flybe employees will now have jobs, and the regional airport staff and suppliers must be very relieved with this news.

Small change John.
Just checked Exeter departures for tomorrow.
Two flights leaving.
1x scilly isles
1x tui

The airport cannot survive this.

One million passengers used Exeter in 2019.

Loganair have expressed an interest in the Scottish routes but that’s no help if you want to go to Manchester

It will take time Barney, the first routes commence next week but some not till mid summer, and isn't it better that some routes are saved, and latest news is that other airlines are interested in some of the other routes.
