How does your garden grow?

Unread post by Onelife »

If its anything like mine then its growing very fast. My wife and I were out at 7.30 this morning giving our hedges their first cut, our lawns are requiring weekly cuts now and the vegetable pot has already provided us with our first salad leaves.

We have the emergence of several herbaceous plant, namely peony’s and our Red-hot Pokers, we also have one tree peony that looks stunning.

Talking peonies do any of you have Welsh peonies? I absolutely love them for their delicate flowers that seen to flower for months at a time.

So how is your garden growing?

Like a tropical rain forest! We're waiting on a couple of on line orders now to refresh the beds as the spring colour starts to fade.

The speculation from "reliable Government sources" is that garden centres will be allowed to open again next week - with suitable social distancing measures in place.

I wish my lawn would grow, despite a few sprinkler episodes it shows very little sign of any real growth, it is reasonably green but not growing anywhere near as fast as my hair.

Hi John,

It sounds like your lawn could do with some aeration as it has probably got a bit compacted….i did some of my lawn a couple of weeks back and sprinkled a bit of sharp sand over it.

We went to a garden centre Food Hall this morning. They were selling vegetable plants at the entrance but of course the main garden centre was shut. They were hoping to be open next Wednesday - dependent on Boris's decision tomorrow.

We're enjoying our garden, while the warm weather lasts. Watching the grass and daisies grow is extremely tiring! On the positive side - our broad beans are growing well with loads of blossom and not a blackfly in sight.

Hi Jill,

We hadn’t intended growing any broad beans this year but the fields adjacent to our house are full of them. I helped myself to a few that the rabbits had unearthed..Honest :) We tend to grow loads of French Beans then freeze them as we have found you don’t need to blanch or do anything with them prior to freezing them…still tucking into them.

I'm not sure but I suspect that we have those as part of our Portmeirion Pottery collection

ps ... the garden is growing like wildfire but Mobietta is doing a fine job keeping it in check. I am fighting against the grass that keep growing in the gaps in the one’s brick paver given that they have stopped me buying Sodium / Potassium Chlorate in case I try making a bomb with it.

Back garden is looking good. Started doing the edges on one part this afternoon until Mrs S pi**ed me off with her nagging about leaving bits of grass on the soil. That was the end of that

Correction to my opening post.... replace Welsh Peonies for "Welsh Poppy"....little yellow flower that spreads quite easily.

Tesco do a spray weedkiller which I assume is glyphosate, I am trying to kill off the couch grass growing up through our lavender, before the lavender gets too lush. It's going brown but there still seems to be more more coming up as well.

Hi Mob…I’ve never bought it from a shopping outlet as you can get it cheaper on line.

Dose it work……it will kill anything it comes into contact with with regard to weeds, nettles, thistles, etc etc

It takes about a week to see any difference but you won’t see the weeds again...

You need to be careful with it as you shouldn’t get it on your skin…thinking about it… the way you go about chopping up wood you best leave well alone

P.s at mates rates I can get 5 L for £50….check out the prices above

The things shooting up and flowering beautifully in our garden are the Echiums. Some are already over 10’ with a couple of months or so still to bloom.

Hi Screwy...just a bit more info...

It is one of the national flowers of Wales. Carl Linnaeus named it after us – Papaver cambrica – in 1753. Cambria is the Latin name for Wales, from our own Welsh name for our country, Cymru. In 1814 the yellow poppy was reclassified differently as a new species, Meconopsis cambrica, by Louis Viguier.

Hi Gill…we had quite a few of them when we moved here, and I have to be honest I didn’t bother to find out what they were. Anyway, to cut a long story short our garden was like a jungle when we moved here so I cleared everything out in an attempt to work from a blank canvas…. funnily enough the area where they were is now our wild area as seen in the Bird Nesting thread. We do have two herbaceous borders which could do with a few more plants in so it’s a case of "in hindsight" as far as the Echiums are concerned.

I absolutely love them and sow seeds every year now as their lifespan is limited.
