Rose Experts
I’ve taken about twenty hardwood rose cuttings, most of which I have planted straight into the ground with the rest into large pots. I’ve noticed this morning that three of them have shoots appearing and I’m wondering if I will need to cover them over winter?
Any advice would be apricated as I can’t find any definitive answer on the net.
Thanks

Try phoning the likes of David Austin I’m sure they will be able to tell you.
I thought that roses were super hardy but cuttings may be different.

I thought you would be an expert on Roses - especially the Caramel hazelnut and strawberry cream ones

Re: Rose Experts
I'm no expert by any means but I have taken several rose cuttings over the years and as you would expect not all take root. Some you win some you lose but the ones that have been successful have given us years of colourful scented pleasure, and the best bit is they were free!
All you can do is protect them from any frost. I use to put mine on a widow sill in doors somewhere warm with plenty of light.

Re: Rose Experts
Hi Stephen, we had a couple of established roses when we moved here but were very over grown so decided to prune them right back. thankfully they survived and in doing so treated us to a lovely display this summer.
I’ve been out and bought a few more, one of which I bought from our local market and it has flowered none stop since April…can’t remember the name of it but I’ll have a look under the woodchip tomorrow to see if I can find the label. It has a lovely scent with beautifully formed mediums sized orange roses. Just stunning!
I’m not going to able to bring the cuttings inside but I can rig a frame and cover them with fleece, hopefully this will cover me for all eventualities?
I'll also give Austin a ring tomorrow.

If your still in the market and garden space for roses try two we have, Gertrude Jekyll and Deep Secret. Lovely scents.

We are having our garden extended over the winter so I’m thinking of establishing two new rose borders, thanks for your recommendations.

Just looked at those recommendations, beautiful. I notice on the David Austin site there is the possibility of an online chat with a Rose Expert so maybe they could help with protecting cuttings during winter.

Hi Carole,
I gave David Austin a ring this morning and spoke to a very helpful chap…. his reply was that I should lay down 4 inches of compost as ground cover, then cover the area with wire mesh then place fleece over top.
Job done!
Thanks everyone for your advice…your chocolates should arrive tomorrow enjoy!
