Re: First Class post - a joke that should be ended
Absolutely right Barney! Incidentally having paid £2.50 for next day delivery last Wednesday (UK Mail), it arrived this morning 3 days late. The mail should be part of the country's infrastructure as you say. In the end our governments will have presided over nothing better than a 'fire sale' of our national assets, and you can forget the Great in GB, we will be in hock to a Heinz 57 of other nations' state sponsored companies.

I see where you're going FB, but not sure I entirely follow the logic.towny44 wrote:If this country is ever going to be great again we need to drastically reduce the public sector wage bill, otherwise we will never get rid of the massive deficit.
The only way to reduce the public sector wage bill significantly is to reduce public sector services. Yes there may still be a little fat to trim but realistically not very much. Witness the deteriorating state of roads etc. And reducing the wage bill, i.e. the government's outgoings, will only impact on the deficit if they are able to maintain their incomings, i.e. taxes, in order the spend that money on paying down both the current deficit and ultimately the accumulated deficit instead of on wages.
So will we be willing to accept paying the same level of taxes when we are getting less public services and having to pay for what we used to get privately at the same time? Personally I doubt it.
I'm all for saving waste but I don't think it's that simple.
And in the case of the current discussion, the Royal Mail used to be publicly owned. It is now in the private sector and to my mind the service has gone down since that privatisation.

Christmas is about the only time the "actually wanted" outnumbers the junk mail in our house.
Some of the latter I wouldn't even bother to open except that the recycling police require the windows of the window envelopes to be ripped out before we recycle the rest!

Trouble is the shredder uses electricity, so it's not PC and another polar bear dies every time you use it.

I have do quite a bit of shopping on line and so far it has been delivered at home when stated.
This year I have shopped on line with John Lewis and they gave me a delivery option of numerous local small shops where I could pick the goods up. Boots also give you this option. I have found it very useful to go and pick up without hanging around for a delivery.

Frank, email the tracking number to getintouch@your.royalmail.com and demand an explanation and a refund to the sender.

We recently discovered John Lewis service delivering on line purchases (free and next day) to our local Waitrose for collection. Worked perfectly and we'll certainly use it again.Andrea S wrote:I have do quite a bit of shopping on line and so far it has been delivered at home when stated.

Alan & Merv
you've both illustrated my position perfectly
Ref Alan's comment - this was a private carrier company, not Royal Mail
Ref Merv's - collections may work perfectly for you. They may not work so well for older folk, some of whom will be housebound.

Quite right on the second point Barney, but for the moment it works for us.barney wrote:Alan & Merv

But on the first, to reiterate the point I made earlier, Royal Mail is now a private carrier company!

Re: First Class post - a joke that should be ended
It would be good to be able to write 'return to sender' on the junk mail and then shove it back into the post box. Let Royal Mail see if they can claim back the postage!

True, but why should we have to? I think it's iniquitous that companies are making money selling our details behind our backs and then sending junk that we don't want.

I did once go through a phase of readdressing each piece of junk to one of the other firms who's send me something, but these days can't be bothered!Stephen wrote:It would be good to be able to write 'return to sender' on the junk mail and then shove it back into the post box. We did once register to stop it but haven't renewed, perhaps we should. As I understand it, in any case, that can only stop the specifically addressed stuff, and not the stuff which the postie is given with directions to shove one through every door.

Not so, see Alan's ' Optout ' site aboveMervyn and Trish wrote:... As I understand it, in any case, that can only stop the specifically addressed stuff, and not the stuff which the postie is given with directions to shove one through every door.
The Postie actually makes more money if you opt out as he/she has to put it into your pile and then take it out again ... now tell me the RM didn't need to be privatised

That was just the point Merv. It wasn't Royal Mail. The delivery man was UK Mail, and was possibly Russian. I'm afraid I will never ne convinced that privatising everything is good for the country.Mervyn and Trish wrote:I did once go through a phase of readdressing each piece of junk to one of the other firms who's send me something, but these days can't be bothered!Stephen wrote:It would be good to be able to write 'return to sender' on the junk mail and then shove it back into the post box. Little funny; When this same delivery man brought a parcel a few weeks ago, Sue answered the door, and he shouted at the top of his voice, "Fot ees your nem?" Sue came back in laughing and saying, "I knew that Putin was a nutter, but I didn't think the KGB were here already!"
