Formality wins the day every time for me, until one party decides it's appropriate to be informal. IMHO, it's only good manners, but then, I'm a curmudgeonly old git.

[quote="jacksparrow"]Just a minute whilst I get my sunglasses out as the green post is very bright.... quote]

I was just trying out some different colours as I struggle to read when there's not enough contrast between the font and background. But I agree, lime green is a tad too bright

I'm not really fussed either way.

However, it seems to be the onboard etiquette for the stewards to use Sir or Madam, so I'm happy to go with that

I think its nice to keep a bit of formality in a world that is becoming increasing overly familiar. At work I am only ever addressed by first name, it seems the days of being called nurse have gone out the window, so I like being addressed as 'Miss' on a cruise

The days of a patient being called Mr. or Mrs...... are also long gone, unfortunately, but it works both ways.

I have no idea how old you are but when my OH or I attend a hospital appointment and are called, 'dear,' or by our first name, by a person younger than our daughters,( they are in their 20's), it irks me.

When I first started teaching I addressed all members of staff, who were older than me, as Mr. Mrs. or Miss. Ms. did not enter the equation then.

I would be very happy to call you nurse XXXXX if I was called in return by my title and surname, unless I asked to be addressed otherwise.

I am not old but was brought up to respect my elders and I expect the same respect given to me and my OH.

Sorry, a bit off topic, but hopefully relevant to the discussion as how to address others and how, in turn, they would like to be addressed.

I know its slightly off subject but I really don't like it when a cold caller asks to speak to Mrs Janis Rosser - I reply - speaking and then they say "how are you today Janis" - cheeky monkeys - needless to say the phone is put down pretty sharpish! I do like a bit of respect but after a few days of getting to know the steward or the waiters I don't really mind if they call me by my first name although it is generally ma'am - if it's good enough for the Queen it's good enough for me!!

Our wine waiter told us that they are told in their training that they must not call passengers by the Christian names.

We have been told the same in the past ... I told him that if his boss was about then sir/madam would do but otherwise use our first names.

I work with babies, so don't tend to call them miss or mister :) As for the parents I will admit to calling them by their first name, or 'mum' and 'dad', although I always ask their name so i suppose they could say Mr or Mrs/Miss if they wanted. Alot are younger than me though (25)

I'm guessing that you might work with babies that are with you over a long period of time, and, in those circumstances, then of course you get to know the parents really well; we got to know the staff very well when our 2 decided to surprise us over 10 weeks early!

Yes very true! Were your 2 both ok? Thats pretty early! Yes i think it is a very different situation in that case to something like a cruise (see tryig to keep on topic :) )

Also in an effort to keep on topic, don't want to be red penned, ;) I have sent you a PM.

I wonder if anyone has shared a table with passengers who insisted on being address by their fellow diners as Mr/Mrs/etc?

Never happened to me yet. If it were to happen, I would just not mention their name at all.

Oh dear...

The Mr, Mrs, Ms thing seems to grate on the "older" folk who seem to 'need' (dare I say "demand") some sort of respect from those who are their "servants". on a cruise ship (as they see it!)

From my perspective - I am in the mid 30's age range - I see nothing wrong with first names, be that from cabin stewards or waiters on any cruise ship.

We have to move with the times... my parents would, perhaps, disagree with me!

I can't see the problem with addressing each other by 'familiar' names.

A more subtle approach would be to refer to them as 'oi you'

The Mr, Mrs, Ms thing ....

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease, not a form of address. As a gentleman (under training ;) ), I refuse to use it to address a lady, and I know of no lady who accepts that ridiculous "title".

On a point of order - you cannot address the majority of the crew by their Christian names

Hi Silver Shiney,

I have to agree with you - a female is either Miss or Mrs (unless there is a title involved - and the female in question wishes not to use said title).

Ms on the other is actually short for miserable - or so I am told!

Em (very happily Mrs!). :)

I well remember sharing a table with a retired Army Officer and his "lady"

It soon became apparent that his "lady" insisted that we were expected to be address by his rank

Major EDITED by POSTER :silent:

He politely referred to us lesser mortals by using our surnames

Fortunately he was a very pleasant and interesting gentleman

His "lady" however was a right pain in the butt

Yet another on board "scary lady"

BTW

Having had the misfortune of being a very junior officer on a cruise ship, my worst experience ever

We had to address all passengers thus "Sir" "Madam" - but in the crew areas this was relaxed

Some quite interesting and clever renaming of that certain passenger
