Cancer Research UK’s Dryathlon

Please forgive me for placing this post here and not within the general post area, but I wanted to cover as many members as possible.

Ray and his family, myself and my family as well as many, many other members of this forum have in their time been effected by the numerous variations of this horrible illness.

The various charities who push research, provide care and assistance are always looking for, not only different ways to raise money, but also ways to raise awareness.

Well they’ve now come up with a cracker! Become a “Dryathlete".

If every member of this forum were to give up “Alcohol” for the whole month of this September and become a Dryathlete just imagine the benefit and wellbeing your bodies would feel. After a summer of overindulgence, clear your heads, feel fitter and save some money for your next cruise.

Now I know that for some, not to signal out Stephen in any way or form, may find this rather hard and perhaps impossible to do. Well you can still help.

Every time you fall by the wayside, for every alcoholic drink you consume during September, then give the equivalent value in cash to “Cancer Research UK”.
You can donate through their website at: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/support ... /dryathlon

I would willingly do this, I'm not much of a drinker at the best of times - but we are going to be on QE the first two weeks of September and I do enjoy one cocktail a day when on board. However, we have certainly been affected by cancer, my dad died of a brain tumour, several of our friends have died of one cancer or another and a very dear friend is going through treatment for breast cancer right now. Also my husband was Medical Director of a Hospice for 24 years, so I shall make a donation.

Count me in, I like a drink now and then but can live without it so I will set my phone calendar to dry mode for September.
I should find it quite easy to go a month without booze so if I do I will still make a donation to the charity.
Good luck with the event.

Sorry but I would not wish to respond to this particular appeal any more than I would to any other that is born out of a routine, and sadly often insincere, advert or an opportunistic gimmick.

My personal experience dictates that folk who have actually experienced the ' BIG C ', in any of it's various forms, will at some stage wish to contribute / give something back for their survival ... it will be a moment of impulse or inspiration that determines what it should be rather than any appeal that happens to present itself along the way.

My own donation was to place a sealed bid for a pheasant shoot in a well known Dorset rural retreat ... I won the bid but gifted it to a neighbour who had supported us throughout a very difficult period. The money went to the landowner's charity of choice, cancer related of course.

ps ... as a Mod I will gladly leave the Topic in ' Cruise Specific ' to ensure that it has the best coverage possible.

Regards Moby(Mod)

Moby, the main purpose of this is to raise awareness.

The secondary part, that of donation, although important is not my main thrust. As one of those folk who is actually experiencing it, yes I wish to give something back and I find your opening sentence about being an opportunistic gimmick somewhat puzzling.
I fear you live a very cynical life.

I'm sure Moby will answer for himself but if you read his post again you will note that, yes, he willingly bid for a cancer fundraising event and kindly donated the prize to someone else - so, no, I do not think he leads a cynical life.

I, too, am currently still receiving treatment for cancer and cannot thank the Macmillan unit enough for their support at this traumatic time and I will give back something when I am able to - like Moby I find a lot of the fundraisers very gimmicky but, hey, if they work we should not knock them. My worry is always how much does the end product receive?

I'm not sure what kind of life Mob leads but I've always found him to be most generous in my times of need...what I can say for sure is that Mobs life will have been made more the happier for having met me at the Adonia naming ceremony...isn't that right Mob?

We all have our favourite charities and ours is supported by us with a monthly d/d and donations at every monthly local branch meeting.

As the Dragons say, I'm out.

I had great support on here when I asked for votes for a bid that I made for a Lloyds Bank community fund grant, it just entailed clicking a link, no donations.

I won't be taking part as we are cruising in September but Cancer Charities are always the ones we choose to donate to.

I agree whole heartedly about awareness but I would venture to suggest that the vast majority of the population are well aware of the impact of these diseases and indeed of the need to raise funds for the various deserving Cancer related causes. Many, if not most, of the people who have been ' touched ' by the BIG C will contribute in their own way and in their own time ... as I did and others will.

That leaves those who simply wish to contribute to a charity from time to time ... but which one ?

As you know we are all bombarded with appeals by the media regarding the making of donations and, yes, I certainly do believe that some are more gimmicky than others and if that sounds cynical to you then so be it.

As for your ' Dryathlon ' approach, well, yes I do find it to be a tad gimmicky ... next month, simply to illustrate the point, we could abstain from cakes and the month after that it could be sweets. It doesn't sound sincere to my way of thinking, just something drummed up by a marketing teen. I have however no doubt at all about your own sincerity regarding this Topic.

I don't believe Mob was being cynical at all. Nowadays we have a profusion of different charities all thinking up schemes to raise funds - charity runs, Movember, Red Nose Day, Pudsey, chuggers on the streets, doorstep 'salesmen', on street collections. The list of initiatives and the list of charities is endless and it is impossible to give to them all. I believe this is what he was referring to and was how I read it.
However we all have our favourite charities and many of us already make regular charity donations. Much of mine is made through a well known organisation which supports local and national charities.
I wish ITWA luck in promoting this charity and hopefully a cure may be found for this terrible disease. Incidentally, my brother is 'recovering' from a brain tumour discovered almost 12 months ago so obviously this charity is close to my heart but has always been supported as my father also fought and survived cancer.

My father died of cancer at only 68, and last year my husband's only sibling died of pancreatic cancer. Of course I support cancer charities especially Macmillan nurses. My own son has a degenerative condition not life threatening but life changing and the charity that requires donations for research into cures for his condition has very little publicity. However, I do not think a cruise forum is the place to ask for donations for any charity.

I am deeply sorry that so many have found this post so distasteful.

This being the case perhaps the "ModPlod's" can take the post down and cast it into the bucket full of sand which so many appear to have their heads buried in.

To those who believe that there is no place within a cruse forum for such posts then I deeply feel sorry for them. Perhaps I need to look for an other home?

John please don't take the many comments made on here too personally - I don't agree with those who say this forum is not the right place for your topic but everyone is entitled to their opinion and as you know yourself we certainly don't agree on everything - that's human nature after all. Take care and please continue to post :)
