Sue I was one of those less fortunate kids, I have not always had money and often went without meals never mind presents, I think kids get far too much at Christmas these days and I don't think it is doing them any favours. My Christmas was a sugar mouse, an apple and a cheap toy all hung up in one of my school socks and the best present I ever got was a second hand Meccano set, we loved Christmas.
Kids today don't know they're born. The relentless push of the advertisers promoting their toys for weeks before Christmas doesn't help, which is partly why I believe the period should be drastically curtailed I used to badger my parents relentlessly for all sorts of things, it's a wonder I'm still alive to tell the tale (I never did get the Johnny 7 assault rifle system). Kids simply do not need expensive toys. Nor, as Ray points out, do they have to be brand-new.
