try to help those less fortunate

Sue I was one of those less fortunate kids, I have not always had money and often went without meals never mind presents, I think kids get far too much at Christmas these days and I don't think it is doing them any favours. My Christmas was a sugar mouse, an apple and a cheap toy all hung up in one of my school socks and the best present I ever got was a second hand Meccano set, we loved Christmas.

Kids today don't know they're born. The relentless push of the advertisers promoting their toys for weeks before Christmas doesn't help, which is partly why I believe the period should be drastically curtailed I used to badger my parents relentlessly for all sorts of things, it's a wonder I'm still alive to tell the tale (I never did get the Johnny 7 assault rifle system). Kids simply do not need expensive toys. Nor, as Ray points out, do they have to be brand-new.

I find it ludicrous that people who can't afford it spend hundreds of pounds on expensive Christmas presents for their kids (and themselves) and then we all spend January listening to their hard luck stories of debt. True, children of today have expensive tastes and parents who are daft enough to pander to them. The true meaning and fantasy of Christmas is lost.
We were told many years ago by one of our relatives, when we asked what the children wanted for Christmas, "You couldn't afford it!!" Another gets so many Advent calendars the children take all the chocolate out of them and put it in a pot for 'general consumption! What does that tell you? Another told us at Easter not to buy the children Easter eggs because they get so many, give them money instead!!! I think I lost touch with them all long ago.

It's the 16th November, so two weeks today I shall start trimming the house and trees(s) - all three of them. And two outside!

Once a month I meet up for a lunch with 2 different sets of old colleagues. Today, one of the group handed me a Christmas card because she realised I will not be going to the December lunches as we will be on a cruise to the Canaries. I didn't give it a thought so will now have to post an extra 14 cards instead of just being able to hand them their cards.

Am I the first person to have received a Christmas card this year ?

I can't do anything until the start of December this year - and then I will firstly think of sorting out some gifts, and hopefully as December progresses I can sort out a couple of cards.

I'm hoping for a quietly lovely time at the end of December, brief and low key but enjoyable.

So, instead of being super-organised which is my usual thing, this year it's other stuff first, festivities later.

All my shopping is done, everything is wrapped, tied, labelled and ready. I shall make the buche de noels to morrow or Friday, for my sister and daughter and pray I can squeeze them in the freezer. Hopefully our son and his partner will be arriving a week before Christmas, so I need to be even more organised than usual.

Hi Gill....how about some of keefy chocolates for a slice of your yule log? :D

The only preparation I've done for Christmas is to bottle three jars of pickled onions that were done four weeks ago.

It's started, I was visiting my local Screwfix depot yesterday for a few supplies and went next door to the B&Q store for a cuppa, the young girl asked me if I wanted to take advantage of the hot drink and a cake deal. My answer was "no thanks I'm coeliac and can't eat the cakes" to which she pointed out that the large mince pies are gluten free, I indulged and it was delicious so Santa came early for Raybo yesterday.

Better still I got my Diamond Card 10% discount as well.

I don't send Christmas cards anymore, it's too much of a commercial rip-off. I would much rather give an equivalent sum to charity
