Memorable Christmases.....

Unread post by suespud »

Reading a post on here reminded me about the year we moved on the 10th of December.
The dates had been pushed back and back....Christmas arrangements were put on the back burner. I only had one child at the time and he was only 18 months old so he wasn't really aware, but the most important thing to me was to get moved in quickly so I could put my Christmas Trees up !!
We moved in and two days later our trees were up and I was all Christmass.
That Christmas was one of the best ever...new home...New Year....and little did I know then..but new baby on the way !!!

Ours was 2010. Our son and his girlfriend were teaching in the Bahamas and about to move to Saigon, so decided to spend Christmas with us en route, and having only two weeks off, asked if her parents could spend it with us too, as they are French, living in Lyon and there wasn't time to fly there as well. All due to arrive on the Sunday.

Unfortunately, it was the year of all the snow, so son and partner were stranded in Nassau, because the aircraft couldn't get out of LHR. But the French parents made it from Lyon to Bristol with no trouble at all!

So we had from Sunday to Wednesday, when son and partner eventually got back, entertaining the French couple, whom we had never met and who spoke not a word of English! And once son and partner arrived, all four of them spoke French, so we were totally out of our depth with our school French. Nightmare!

1989 was my most memorable, we had moved house in the August but our house sale had fallen through and a bridging loan was crippling us so to sell the week before Christmas was a huge relief, thankfully we had made the decision to move I don't think I would have coped very well with Christmas and a move oh and there was definitely no 'new home, new year, new baby' by eck Sue you don't do things by halves do you

We moved into this house in December 18th 2012. We knew it needed work, but until we moved in had no idea quite how much, and when we walked in I seriously thought we had ruined our lives completely, but four years on - and an awful LOT of money - we have made it comfortable. But that was another memorable Christmas. We worked like slaves getting it straight enough to make an attempt at Christmas for two of our children.

I shan't be doing that agan, that's for sure!

A bitter sweet very very memorable Christmas with some very sad and amazingly happy moments was the year my dad was given six weeks to live, on Christmas Eve.
We knew he was terminal ( asbestos), but we were not expecting it to happen so soon.
I was with my mam and dad in the car on the way back from the hospital, so we all discussed how we were going to handle it. My children were aged 8,6 and 5
My dad was amazing, he said just lets not say anything and let's make some special memories for the kids...which we did.
We spent almost every hour we could together, My mam and dad slept at our house for the whole of the Christmas week....we sang in the New Year, through many tears...Hugged and expressed our love for each other..my dad was surrounded by love from his whole family. He dressed up as Santa..had his photo taken with the kids and us.
He was in pain a lot though and there were some dark times..but these were shielded from the kids.
We had lots of family and friends come visit, to say their goodbyes, but always left smiling, after my dad joked with them.
A very very memorable Christmas.xxxxxxxx

He died peacefully on Feb 4th. 1994. Age 63.
I still miss him terribly...but it always makes me smile when I think about him and that Christmas :D

How lovely that you could all make a special last Christmas for your dad, and special memories for everyone. Both my grandmothers died in Christmas week, so Christmas is always tinged with a little sadness.

I'm sure your dad is looking down and pleased to see you still make such an effort, Sue x

1978 - stuck at the Army barracks at Mill Hill on Operation Burberry (the firemen's Strike)

20 December 1988 - moving house on my son's birthday on posting to London having only moved house from London to Aylesbury on posting only four months earlier. Our new "home" hadn't been cleaned by the previous occupants, who had ground lots of chewing gum into the lounge carpet squares (we weren't allowed fully fitted carpets in those days)

Mine would be the Christmas of 1978 - we had married in January of that year. My parents came to spend Christmas with us and my husband's parents lived next door - yes living next door to the in-laws - but it worked fine. Anyway on Christmas morning we did all the present opening and when all was done I said I had two more things to give out - two cards, one I gave to my mother and one to my mother-in-law. The one to my mother said on the front - Happy Christmas Nana, and the one to my mother-in-law - Happy Christmas Grandma (my mother was already a Nana). Inside I'd written, Happy Christmas from your Grandchild, due in August! Both mothers then had tears in their eyes and their respective husbands just looked on not knowing quite what to say apart from the good suggestion "Where's the Champagne?" All four Grandparents are gone now but I'll never forget that Christmas.

Hi Carole ..l can't think of a nicer present and what a lovely way to have received it.....lovely story.

We had new neighbours move in 18 months ago and they had their first child (Poppy) the week before Christmas. Just seeing her brings back all the lovely memories of our daughters birth which was also in December.

If there is a down side it's that Birthdays and Christmas fall together so it can be quite expensive month. That being said the other 11 months don't get much cheaper either when you have a daughter l have found.

Regards

Keith

Yes birthdays near Christmas can be difficult. Mine is near the middle of December and I've always had a great problem convincing my husband that although he gave me a nice present for my birthday (assuming he consulted our daughters first!) then that is no reason why I shouldn't have a nice Christmas present!

My birthday December 21

I always had a presents from my three Aunts

"happy birthday and Christmas"

Never liked them

Felt cheated that my birthday was deemed the shortest day of the year
