I am certain that whatever the reason behind the last minute cancellation, you have taken that decision for 'all the right reasons'.

I know from past experience how upsetting it is when a person has to 'do the right thing' and listen to their own personal conscience and cancel plans - especially when it's a much looked-forward to holiday.

Whatever your reason, rest assured that you have done the right thing; and that in due course you will be content that you took that decision.

Why sad Gill

Because going away was the lifeline keeping me going at the moment while my mum is dying, but the up and down nature of her dying means we are unable to go. We've had a truly terrible six months.

So of course we have done the right thing by cancelling - and losing the cost because nobody would cover us for cancellation or curtailment for her the past few years - but we and all medical personnel really thought the situation would have resolved by now and we'd be able to go. So while I didn't think twice about cancelling, I still feel sadness on top of sadness!

So sorry Gill - thinking of you - its a "no win" situation you are in - so difficult having an elderly parent as I well know. My mother has just been diagnosed with shingles today - the rash looks so sore and there is really nothing I can do for her - she has medication and is surprisingly cheerful - not sure I would be. Take care xxx

Funny thing I asked the doctor about calamine lotion and he said not to put anything on the blisters but if they are irritating wrap them in cling film - the mind boggles doesn't it - I suppose it forms some sort of barrier.

I would imagine it helps prevent scratching and thereafter infection.

When I had shingles last year I rubbed in some calming cream.

The whole episode was very painful. It was only two weeks before I was due to go on a Baltic cruise.

Gill sorry to hear you have had to cancel your cruise. I have a friend who is sailing with Cunard in a few weeks and her elderly father has fallen at home and is in hospital. It's a sign of the times that our parents are living so long. Spent all afternoon with my father who will be 90 this year concerning funding for my mum in her nursing home.

A forehead type pain with itching is, in many cases, the first sign of shingles ... go to the Docs within 3 days and medication to make it a less painful experience is then possible. It is also advisable to have a ' jab ' once the condition has cleared up as this will ease the symptoms if you get it again.

Thnaks for the comments. The holiday day came and went so I have now forgotten about it. Mum continues to deteriorate and we hope to be in a position to book something else in a day or two at most. There will be no funeral so we will be free to go whenever we want.

Yes out of interest in the fact that Gill herself has told us this info, perhaps it could that mum has donated her body to medical science or is non religious.

I mentioned yesterday that my friend's dad was in hospital, another of my closest friends rang today and her mil has fallen and broken her hip.
It's all around us at the moment.

I had an Uncle who done the same thing (donating body)
Mind you think of the positive you're lucky to have them live as long. My father died when I was 26 (on my daughter's 2nd birthday) and my mother when I was 41
