Sorry about that Keith, but I well remember an uncle of mine who kept hens, think he stated keeping them in a similar situation during the war, and he used to ring an old birds neck when she stopped laying, for a special Sunday dinner.

I think l could just about go there John but sitting round the dinning table with the wife and daughter balling their eyes out wouldn't be my idea of a nice Sunday dinner.towny44 wrote: 02 May 2020, 09:41Sorry about that Keith, but I well remember an uncle of mine who kept hens, think he stated keeping them in a similar situation during the war, and he used to ring an old birds neck when she stopped laying, for a special Sunday dinner.

What a snowflake ... as a slip of a lad I remember sitting down at the Christmas table enjoying a hearty meal of rabbit with potatoes and vegetables from the garden.
A good ol boy was Reg

I remember reading a true life survival story about a chap castaway at sea.....He survived many weeks eating what he could catch but his favorite nibble was the eyes of fish and turtles......so l suppose if you are really desperate even Stephens testicles would appear appetising.towny44 wrote: 02 May 2020, 10:01Yes I suppose they built the wartime ladies of sterner stuff back then.Onelife wrote: 02 May 2020, 09:51I think l could just about go there John but sitting round the dinning table with the wife and daughter balling their eyes out wouldn't be my idea of a nice Sunday dinner.towny44 wrote: 02 May 2020, 09:41

Re: Bird watching
What a difference a day makes, Molly and Maude seem a lot happier, whilst still having to the do the Harlem shuffle on occasions. They seem to be getting more of a rest bite as we think Susie seems to have gone a bit broody, she spent two hours sitting on one egg this afternoon which I know isn’t something we want to encourage but for a bit of piece and quite acceptable under the circumstances.
It’ll be another five or six weeks before the girls start paying for themselves with lovely fresh eggs…believe me when I say you can tell the difference from shop bought eggs. When we have a surplus of eggs, we give them to a friend who loves them for her cake making…something to do with the yellowness of the yolk so I’m told?
Are there any other chicken keepers on the forum? If so, why don’t you join in and let us talk about omelettes together…it will also be an easy introduction to joining in with the forum.

Re: Bird watching
Well as the sun goes down on a mixed day for the girls ... its had ups and downs the downs. Maude was wedged between the cadge and the water feeder again this morning…not sure if she was petrified or just playing hide and seek. The socialising went as well as can be expected with both my wife and daughter walking around the garden with both Molly and Maude on their shoulders...I know I thought the same.
We sent the girls off to bed happy with the leftovers from a joint of ham.
The pair of Robins in the Gas tank have hatched

I think we’ve cracked it…. took the girls a little more ham out this evening and Susie although grumpy couldn’t stop Molly, and to a lesser extent Maude from picking up the scraps, which is an improvement on the last few days. There doesn’t appear to be any squabbles once the girls are in their coop so we are having a lie in tomorrow.

Re: Bird watching
Much better day today even thought they are still practising social distancing. Molly appears to be getting much bolder whereas Maude is still looking to Molly for cover.
I have only just closed up their pen but took the opportunity to see their sleeping positions…well it would have melted your hearts. We only have two nest boxes, one of which Susie always commanders the other had both Molly and Maude squeezed in together….if only I could get my head around posting pictures i bet I’d have you all saying Ahhhh!
Message for Mods….if I sent you a picture of them by email would you be able to cut, resize and post for me?
