When you say 'didn't look after it', what do you mean. Most batteries these days are sealed units so unless your going to read it a story each night before going to bed there's nothing to maintain.

You would know that a battery has to be charged ( this is more for OL than you of course

) and that there is a percentage of charge that is required to start the car. Let us say 70%. If the battery drops below that threshold to say 60% then the car will not start. The RAC or you will need to put a charger on it until the percentage rises above 70%, no problem. However ...
If it sits there and doesn't get charged by being driven or by being put on a charger then the battery will lose charge to a point where it cannot be re-charged back to a figure over 70%. If that happens then you, rather than the battery, are at fault. This is written in the RAC blurb when they sell you a battery and it applies to all reputable manufacturers.
