I have no grounds to back this up but while working from home is an option during Covid l'm less inclined to believe this will work long term. When Covid is behind us there is going to have to be an awful lot of trust on behalf of the employer that their employees have the same work ethic as they would in a 9 till 5 working office environment.

I'm not getting into any discussions about this but please feel free to explain why this might not be the case.
I can only give you our experience. During our latest Town Hall we were told that the management team have seen no perceptible reduction in productivity or quality and, in some areas there is a measurable increase in both. Not a single team has missed a deadline. I am hearing similar stories from other similar companies (but accept that there will be exceptions).

Part of that has been people have been working much more flexible hours. I find I have so much more time that I have been attending meetings with our colleagues in India at 6AM and also with our American colleagues at 8-9 at night ... but yet I fell less stressed and get more done with more time for Julie and personal jobs.

Yea, most people have laptops but some, like me hate using trackpads and a find a movable keyboard much more comfortable. I have only ever been in one of these offices (in Panama City, after a power out where my hotel was) ... you had to ask for a keyboard and mouse. They had wiped them down but also gave you anti-bacterial wipes for your own peace of mind ... that was before COVID (possibly now they wouldn't even give you the keybaord).

That will be another consequence of working from home, and apparently it is already happening in some parts of the country

There seem to have been various benefits from people working from home. Including reductions in traffic, pollution and fuel consumption. Better quality of life. Healthier environment. I'm not sure we should sacrifice that to save city centre coffee shops. If it works let's adapt to it. It won't for everyone but let's look at every case on it's own merits. Maybe suburban coffee shops will benefit?
