If that's so why they are so bothered about some beimg diverted to the UK?
The AstraZeneca chief Pascal Soriot explained the reason there were hold-ups in supplies to the EU was simple. It had only placed its orders three months after Britain did. Perhaps the EU should have prepared better but our media would not give us any credit for that.

As is often the case, it was just a sensationalist headline by a journalist who did not understand what they were being told
https://fullfact.org/health/german-astr ... delsblatt/

However what you must remember is that the first jab is just a primer for the immune system, and only has a limited effect against the virus, it is the second jab that produces the full immune response and drives up the efficacy.
That's not what Whitty and Vallance are saying, they feel that the first jab provides a high level of protection and the second extends the length of the protection.
This may help taken from BBC/Future

How booster vaccines work

When the immune system first encounters a vaccine, it activates two important types of white blood cell. First up are the plasma B cells, which primarily focus on making antibodies. Unfortunately, this cell type is short-lived, so although your body might be swimming in antibodies within just a few weeks, without the second shot this is often followed by a rapid decline.

Then there are the T cells, each of which is specifically tailored to identify a particular pathogen and kill it. Some of these, memory T cells, are able to linger in the body for decades until they stumble upon their target – meaning immunity from vaccines or infections can sometimes last a lifetime. But crucially, you usually won't have many of this cell type until the second meeting.

The booster dose is a way of re-exposing the body to the antigens – the molecules on pathogens that trigger the immune system – to initiate part two of the response. "You've kicked in all this fancy stuff," says Altmann. "So, once you've had your boost you'll have a higher frequency of memory T cells and ditto to some extent for the size of the pool of memory B cells you'll have. They'll also be making higher quality antibodies."

On second exposure to the same vaccine or pathogen, the B cells that remain from before are able to rapidly divide and create a menacing throng of descendants, leading to a second spike in the amount of antibodies circulating.

One of my thoughts:

https://www.bhf.org.uk/informationsuppo ... ed#lasting

How long does the vaccine last?

We don't yet know exactly how long protection will last, because the vaccines haven’t been around for long enough.

The second dose is more important for longer-lasting protection, so it's really important to go back for your second dose when you are invited for it.

The length of protection may vary between different vaccines. It is likely to be at least several months, but it may be that repeat vaccinations are needed. Researchers are studying this closely.

That is saying pretty much the same thing. The first jab will produce an immune response but (and it depends on demographics) has limited efficacy (sometimes less than 50%) and the current thinking is that it will be short lived i.e. coronavirus will eventually defeat it in a significant number of people. This is the primer for the immune system. If everybody got a single jab it would still provide some protection - however it is unlikely that it will produce herd immunity. You should also continue to isolate even after the first jab.

The second jab then builds on this, the body recognises what it has learned and builds on that learning creating a strong and (hopefully) lasting immune response in most people. Again you should continue to isolate for a few weeks to allow this immune response to build up. The use of multiple doses of a vaccine is not unusual - it may even ultimately be found we need more than 2 jabs.

Hopefully, towards the end of this year, the second wave of vaccines will arrive and may (or may not) only need a single dose.

My husband has had a letter with the date for his first vaccine for the 14th February, he's in the over 70's age group. I've still to hear as I'm in the over 65's group

That sounds like a tomorrows world script intended for an audience of numpties. I think I prefer Whitty and Vallances justifications for lengthening the gap between jabs.

Thank goodness we are independent and able to move things forward without having to await approval from 27 other states.

Did all the replys not go to explain the science behind the jab, which help the thinking of the longer gap between jabs.
