I'm watching a brilliant game of football live on BT Sport. Consett 2 v Hebburn Town 2. Half hour to go. It's the final of the 2020 FA Vase. The 2020 FA Trophy Final is on at 4.30 pm Harrogate Town v Concord Rangers.

Real proper football. If you know what I mean.. MoB Hebburn's nickname is the Hornets......just saying.
Is that so .... come on you 'Ornets

I axed BT Sport at the last renewal cos they don't cover the Championship games

ps .... who won the Trophy / Cup ?
.

Harrogate Town, although they are now in League 2.

Yes Harrogate win 1-0. It was last year's final, when they were non League.

Hebburn (the 'Ornets) win the trophy 3-2. Brilliant game.

There are some pretty good players in non league who, for one reason or another, never quite cracked it at professional level.
Sometimes attitude. Sometimes badly advised.
Rarely for lack of skill or technique.

We at Gills signed a young lad two seasons ago who was released by Man Utd called Matt Willock.
He was forecast to be a star but never broke in to United squad.
We expected good things at league one level but he has made exactly zero starts in league matches and when given the chance in cup games, showed little appetite.
The skill level is clearly there but his work rate and appetite for victory is clearly missing.
He’ll be released in June and will no doubt drop into non league or maybe give it up as a bad job and do something else.
All this lad has done since he was ten is kick a football.
His brother is currently on loan from Arsenal at Newcastle and is doing well.

The big question is why has this lad’s career gone to pot?
Too much too soon?

We have one of those, Issac Success did ok in the beginning but maybe got too comfortable with his well paid life style. Now he hides behind injuries and rarely, if ever, performs at the level required when given the opportunity. At times he does look as though he lacks confidence but some, including himself, reckon he needs to grow up.

We had the third brother on loan from Benfica last season, we would have liked to sign him but he chose QPR, I think, rather than us. Maybe he made the right decision.

We’re fully expecting to lose Jordan Graham back to the championship John.
He’s had a relatively injury free season (for him) and looked a class above league one.
12 goals and as many assists.
We only signed him on a year because of his injury record.
Kyle Dempsey, who I believe played for the Terriers some years back has also had a really good season, but he’d cost a fee.
Connor Ogilvie, left back centre back will probably also move to the championship and he’ll be difficult to replace.
We started last preseason with just six players so we’re in much better shape already for next season.

We have quite a lot of players contracts ending this summer, quite a few still on enhanced wages, even after allowing for the relegation reduction from the PL. Some are past it, but others should be able to get good deals elsewhere, so we will be in the market for some cheap good 'uns.

Most of our players are on less than 3k a week so pretty much any championship team will easily afford them.
It was reported that the highest earners at the club were the two Arsenal youngsters who both failed to win a place in the team.
Highest in the signed squad is Dominic Samuel on £3.4 k a week.

We paid a million for Vardy a few years ago from Fleetwood. Do you think we were robbed?
In all seriousness we have a good track record of buying from the lower leagues and, with the benefit of good, knowledgeable scouts, have found some real gems in this country and abroad. We picked up a young lad from Luton for something like eight and a half million ho would have been in the running for England honours had he not got injured. Many of these lads have been discarded by the big clubs but, given the right attitude they can make their careers at other clubs.
All too often fame overcomes them and they fail to make the grade. We had a young boy who was picked up by a Premier academy and went on to play for England youth. Unfortunately as he got older the fame went to his head and his football dropped away. He was never to be heard of again. Sad really.

Our best buy was Tony Cascarino from Crockenhill for a dozen used tracksuits and two match balls.

He had a great career including Celtic, Villa, Chelsea and a few french teams plus nearly 90 caps for Ireland.
When he retired, he confessed that he actually had no Irish blood connections.
He qualified via his grandfather but later admitted that he was adopted.

I remember his debut.
We loved his never give up attitude.

I see Riyad Mahrez scored last night for Man City. We picked him up for £500k and sold him for £60million. That's good business.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka cost us nothing and we sold him to Man United for £53m. That's also a bargain.

We also signed Ian Wright from a Sunday League team. I think we paid for a new kit for his old team.

Wan Bissaka was sold for an initial £45m. possibly rising to £50m with add ons.

Why is it Utd transfers are always reported higher than they actually are.

The difference could be that the buyer shows the full amount paid including the outrageous agents fees.

We never really know how much a player is transferred for. Price vary depending on what paper ,/ web site you read. However much Man U paid for our Aaron it was very good business......from Palaces point if view

We like doing transfer business with man U. We sold them Wilf for about £10.5. They loaned us back Wilf for the rest of the season so he could help us win promotion. Hardly played him and eventually sold him back to Palace for about £3.5m. That's good football business.

And United retain a 20% sell on clause for Wilf should/when you sell him, even though Palace tried to get it removed as part of the Aaron deal.

As far as I'm concerned United are welcome to it, after all they need the money. Hopefully they won't get any money because we keep Wilf until the end of his contract and then he can go for nothing.
