I'm really looking forward to Monday - well maybe Tuesday - when Zoe Ball will stop banging on about it every two minutes every day.

Re: Football 20/21
I wonder how many of us remember England v Germany 1966? I would imagine there will be a few. I remember it particularly as I was on night duty at Barts. Some of us lived in a very prestigious Nurses' Home in Bryanston Square, off Oxford Street. Those of us on night duty weren't supposed to be allowed to get up before something like 5-6 pm. On that day we all rebelled and got up to go into the sitting room where there was a TV. Our dragon-like warden tried very hard to make us go back to bed but she couldn't really do anything when we all refused. There were threats that she'd go and phone the Matron but that would have put her in a bad light so we were able to sit down and watch. I vaguely remember that when we drove in our coach to the hospital in Smithfield there were lots of crowds making lots of noise.
It's made me feel very old when all these commentators have said that they weren't even born when that World Cup happened.

I was 19 and my boyfriend (later to be my lovely husband) came over to watch it but my mother and I weren't really interested and went out to the garden. Still not really interested but confess I really like and admire Gareth Southgate and wish England success on Sunday

Re: Football 20/21
I was working the summer holidays as a student in The Winter Gardens beer cellars in Blackpool unloading beer wagons and stocking up the bars. I didn't work afternoons so I could watch the match. My uncle even went out and bought a new TV. The bars were particularly busy that night.
The cellars at The Tower were interesting as the area where we worked was just around the corner from the lion cages for the circus. It could be a bit unnerving at times.

I was five and living in Australia, so no recollection for me, only what I’ve seen on tv.

Same age as you Jan. Final day was the day I was going on holiday. I had spent months prior to that building a double chine fast runabout with cabin and that was to be the first time we would be sleeping on the water. Time we set sail it was well into the evening and just made our first mooring before losing the light. A great end to a fantastically exciting day.
Don't worry, be happy

Mrs B, who has no interest in football was a nervous wreck last night during the game.
I told her that we fans put up with that every time our teams play.

There’s alway some who spoil it, although I think it could have been a reflection off one of their supporters ear rings

I hope they find the clown who was responsible and throw the book at them. With CCTV being what it is the culprit may be traceable. Nobody wanted England to win more than I but if we have to resort to underhand tactics by supporters I would rather we lost. As for the booing of the national anthems I find that childish and totally unacceptable. By all means boo the team (and on a separate issue the taking of the knee which I disapprove of) but the singing of the national anthems should be sacrosanct and these people who boo simply let us all down as a nation.
As with the Stephen Whitty incident last week some people have no idea about being respectful. Sad.

Re: Football 20/21
We remember 1966 well. My wife and I had met earlier that year on 12th February when we were both sixteen. We were at the Royal Tournament at Earls Court when they announced the result of the semi-final and we watched the match itself on her parents’ small black and white TV. That Saturday evening her father drove us to Victoria station where she caught the train to Germany for an exchange visit. I remember the streets of London being full of supporters of both teams making merry in the streets.CaroleF wrote: 08 Jul 2021, 13:18I wonder how many of us remember England v Germany 1966? I disagree about booing the team Foxy, there is no need for it at any time. I’m with you on the taking the knee though, unnecessary.

Re: Football 20/21
I have no problem with fans expressing displeasure at gamesmanship, time wasting, diving, cheating, foul play etc. To some extent it's part of the live experience at a football match but we should respect national anthems.
I also enjoy fan's banter towards each other but that's where it ends and we should all be grown up enough to know it's banter and nothing more. Unfortunately we always get the idiots who take it further.

Congratulations to Italy. On the night they were the better team. We lost to some dreadful penalties. Simply awful.
